Plant nurseries in Luzern, Zug, Schwyz area.

Has anyone got any recommendations for plant nurseries or garden centres in the Luzern, Zug, Schwyz area?

I know about Gärtnerei Schwitter AG but that is shockingly expensive compared with Meier gartencenter near Rapperswill.

I'm looking for mainly deciduous shrubs to form an informal screen so any ideas here also welcome.

I've got Phototina x Fraseri 'Red Robin' on the list. (which is evergreen, I know!).

Tom, since you seem to know a thing or two about gardening take a gander at Hornbach garden center in Galgenen SZ.

You won't get the level of service and staff expertise, nor the range of 'out of the ordinary' as you would from Meier, but if you know your plants you can find some very nice specimens at quite good prices. New plants seem to come in later in the week, ahead of the weekend rush, so it's often good to go then or early on Saturdays.

I do much of my shopping there. They carry a good range of Haeberli fruit, for instance. And then given what I have saved on basics I can afford a bit of indulgence at Meier.

My local Hornbach is now Luzern-Littau and not Galgenen any more. But yes, I do like Hornbach and the plants do seem healthy and we bought a James Grieve apple tree there in October which was a bit of a find.

It's probably where we'll go unless someone knows of a gem tucked away somewhere.

I had some lucks with some plants at Landi

Never been to this one as I normally go to the one in Neftenbach (which is way off for you)

Re: Plant nurseries in Luzern, Zug, Schwyz area.

Hibiscus, Weigela, Lilac.
Note that Buddleia (Butterfly bushes) are not recommended - on the ban list actually - as they grow like weeds & self-seed. It also needs cutting back a lot.
Bamboo also to be avoided as it is highly invasive.
About to plant the same thing here as our old hedge has been removed & we'd like to keep the view in winter but have something nice growing in the summer.

Landi in Küssnacht am Rigi has proven a good source for us. There is also a Baumschule close to Schwitter on the road going away from Root - they do sell to the public, but the choice is very limited.

That's out local Landi - I wasn't particularly impressed. The one in Wadenswil seems to have a lot more plants.

No plans to plant Buddleia. Hibiscus, Weigela are good. I think they were on my original list which I lost.

Re: Plant nurseries in Luzern, Zug, Schwyz area.

I'd 2nd Landi - not on range, but on price-quality they're hard to beat.

Meier has a big range, some unusual stuff, and costs a fortune - may be worth it if you have something specific in mind or are looking for inspiration: http://www.meier-ag.ch/ - there's a Landi right next door for the other garden stuff and wallet protection.

Hornbach has generally proved OK, as has Coop B&H, although Coop seems to focus a lot on gimicks (at Easter, every pot has some sort of egg or bunny in it, in October it's witches, etc).

Thanks for the tip - I will check it out. I am a sucker for a reduced price/sorry looking plant in need of some tlc. Landi do a good line in these

Around here, the main choice of deciduous screen/hedge is "Buche". It grows pretty quickly (30-40 cm per year) so you can save a bit by buying smaller plants.

I get most of our plants at Hornbach Littau as well. I have also had good luck purchasing online from baldur-garten.ch but the plants are usually kind of small so you'll have to wait a few years for them to provide proper privacy. I also ran across this website (heckenpflanzendirekt.ch) a while back that seemed to have decent pricing. Can't recommend them though as I've never purchased from them.

I found this place was http://www.bacher-gartencenter.ch/ was cheaper than our local garden center as well as landi and hornbach for hedge plants.

Their prices look good but the total price including delivery makes it attractive.

As an example, 470 CHF worth of shrubs (5 of them) came to a grand total of 770 CHF with delivery.

Delivery is much better value when you spend several thousand francs.

Although they have a .ch web address, they're actually in Germany.

These two are good:

Eschmannpflanzen in Emmen www.eschmannpflanzen.ch is at the Luzern Sat and Tues morning market.

Die wildstauden gartnerei www.wildstauden.ch is in Eschenbach and is at the market in Helvetiaplatz on Sat mornings until normally mid May.
