Offered a job in Oftringen, AG. Where to live?

Hi Forum

I would like some advice on where to look for renting a small apartment/studio as I have been offered a job in Oftringen which I intend to accept. I will need a flat within a reasonable distance of work. Biking distance would be nice, second option will be train and by car only third priority.

I currently live in Geneva where I will continue to have my permanent residency (my girlfriend works in Geneva) but I am looking for somewhere to stay during the week.

I prefer to travel back and forth by train and my intention is to travel from Geneva on Monday and back on Friday although daily commuting is just about doable as I can work on the train. But I prefer not to.

Olten is the obvious choice and Zofingen has been recommended and both have direct train connection to Geneva. One of my future colleagues lives in Zofingen. None of my other future colleagues live nearby and in general they all frowned at living in Olten. If I should stay further away, I'd prefer it to be in the direction of Berne/Bienne to avoid extending the commute.

What other opportunities are there?

I am 34 with no kids. I'd like to stay in a place where there are some English speakers as I do not speak German (yet). I will be looking to ride my road bike after work (preferably with a club) and perhaps also join a football club.

If you want cycling distance and a train connection to Geneva is Zofingen pretty much the only choice... only IR trains but therefore direct connection to GE...

Zofingen and Olten are just about the same distance from where my work will be - just about 5km depending on apartment location. This distance is definitely doable by bike. I'd say that the bike commute will probably be capped at 10km but I don't mind taking the train every morning if it comes to that.

I understand that a direct train connection to Geneva can be a serious constraint but if anyone can recommend a nice area I am open to it even without the direct link to Geneva - it all depends. I don't know the area very well.

Zofingen is a lovely small town. Much nicer than Oftringen. Olten is also not as bad as some people make it out to be. But I would stay away from Oftringen. Zofingen will be nicer for bike riding than Olten. The problem with going towards Biel is that the IC train from Olten doesn't stop until Solothurn. Solothurn is lovely, but you will have a long commute to work. From Zofingen you have a direct train to Geneva, a short commute to work, lots of places to ride the bike and I am sure there is a football club.

Hello there! I've just come across your comment here about Oftringen. Why would you stay away from Oftringen? Is it only because it's less nice than Zofingen, or any other specific reason?

I'm considering moving to the area, and on paper Oftringen looks okay so far for me, so I'm genuinely interested in any first-hand opinion.

Thanks in advance!
