I found this place right on Lake Zurich for 2,500chf per month - seems like a bargain

It has a gas stove. That alone is a sure sign that it isn't located in Switzerland ;-)

Funny that - I had a gas stove when I lived in Zurich (8032)

Re: Cheapest parts of Zurich?

Maybe i couldn't quite get to you guys

First of all i'm talking about Zurich city and surrounding suburbs.

Canton is too big, i don't know if there are people commuting to Zurich from Winterthur

I was looking for some sort of map for Zurich area with average rent.

If there are Americans they would understand.

Something like this.

American real estate sources are very mature but Europe is behind in this.

Thanks.

Uhm yeah, several thousand a day. You do realize Zurich-Winterthur is a 20mins train ride?

People also commute to Zurich from Bern, Basel, Baden, St. Gallen, Lucerne, Frauenfeld, Schaffhausen and pretty much every commune in the canton of Zurich itself.

The canton is not "too big". Nothing in Switzerland is "too big".

Here's a map for Zurich and Winterthur: http://blog.tagesanzeiger.ch/datenbl...ietpreise-dazu Of course similar maps do exist for a lot of places in Europe. Googling in the local language may help find what you're looking for.

Actually there are. Loads of them. That's why the trains are so full in the mornings.

Uhhhmmm, commuted from Schaffhausen to Zurich for quite a while. Lots of people who do that. Now commuting from Zurich to Lucerne.

Seems you need to adapt to Swiss travel times as they are not as bad as you think

Re: Cheapest parts of Zurich?

There are even people living in/near Bellinzona (Ticino) and commuting to Zurich every single day.

You get a reasonable comfortable ride with a 1. Class GA (which is perfectly acceptable priced at 6300 CHF/pA), and while the ride is 1hr38min each way, it's direct, so you can sleep/eat/work/read/play..

Rent in Bellinzona is quite a bit less than in Zurich, you've the advantage of nicer weather (in general), cheaper food when eating out, generally a more relaxed lifestyle.

Of course, having such a long (albeit easy) commute isn't for everyone..

Re: Cheapest parts of Zurich?

I would do this (maybe) if my employer would count one hour each way as work-time.

And I would need to work close to the Zurich main-station and live close to the Bellinzona main-station as to not waste another 20 minutes on each side.

I know somebody who did that (he worked at the ETH), albeit from Ambri and with closer to 4h each way!

God is too busy making homeopathy believers ill to worry about people who commute 90mins each way.

Oberland is way out but you gave a good option, thanks

Commute would be a breeze actually!
Do you have an idea how big it needs to be and how long you need it for? Adliswil and Horgen offer easy commutes and often have a few cheap apartments.

These two apartments are the bargains in my neck of the woods, and I viewed the first one that last time it was available. It's really nice.

i know a few people commuting from schaffhausen to zurich or vice versa.

due to fast trains and slow trams, geographical distance doesn't necessarily match commuting times 1:1.
