When should we move to Zurich?

Dear fellow EF members,

My husband will be reading for an LL.M degree at Zurich University for 1 year, starting September 2018. We have read that renting in Zurich is no joy-ride and that it is very competitive. Since we're married and a good housing arrangement is a must for us we are thinking of visiting the city in the coming months (April or May) so as to secure ourselves a place for when we arrive in August-September.

Do you think this is a good idea? What is your experience? Did you visit the city before? How long did it take for you to find your apartment? How long should it take for us to "get used to our surroundings"?

Thank you!

Re: When should we move to Zurich?

Another thing, we are considering contacting real estate agents to make some searches for us whilst we're still living away. Any recommendations?

Danke!

Re: When should we move to Zurich?

Yes, visit - you are more likely to get a property if you've met the people involved in renting it out, and obviously the decision is easier if you see the area.

And Zurich is a nice place, plenty to see and do for a long weekend or more if you're using time for flat hunting.

Can't the Uni help out with this sort of thing? We used a relocation agent, who lined up a series of viewings to make the visit efficient, navigation easy etc.

Where are you coming from? Zurich is easy to get used to in that it is well organised, clean, safe - less to worry about than many major cities.

Obviously language is possibly an issue.

Read everything on www.homegate.ch, www.comparis.ch and other renting sites - you can get an idea of rates, property sizes, locations etc.

Re: When should we move to Zurich?

Welcome to the Forum.
In case no-one else fancies going through all the relevant information yet again, might I suggest that you read the sticky threads at the top of this section of the forum. You'll begin to see the rules and generally get the message. There are also several ( British understatement) threads in the same section covering the same questions.
Happy hunting.
