After you have done the laundry hang the wet clothes all over so that the moisture keeps the room cool, open up the windows to make a draft or get a fan or aircon from Migros or Coop which might be on special due to high demand

Are you kidding?! Do you actually do all that yourself?

Re: How do you keep your house cool?

Our flat keeps a rather steady temperature through the year, but the important thing is to get some sort of air circulation through the place. We have no A/C, but having all the windows open (if only a little bit) is enough to keep the place cool enough, even if there's very little wind outside.

But come on, it hasn't been that hot lately. Nowhere near warm enough to be Christmas.

Re: How do you keep your house cool?

I thought I'd dig up this old thread before someone brings up questions on the subject.
Seems no-one wrote in it last year so perhaps we didn't have a summer.
Be that as it may, there are a few good tips in here and it will give you all something to read.

Re: How do you keep your house cool?

yeah I was considering to buy one of these portable AC's until I found out that I would need to cut out a hole in the window for the tube/hose (all rooms have floor to ceiling windows and doors) and when leaving I would need to replace the window so that there is no hole...sounds like expensive proposition so unless anyone has better ideas how to handle it I will stick to keeping the blinds down all day and open for the night. Of course getting hammered helps but not sustainable in long run

Open the windowand block it up with sturdy cardboard, wood or perspex into which you can cut a hole. You can even seal it round the edges with bathroom sealant.

sounds interesting but I do not get it. SO window stays open, there is a cardboard wall covering the opening with the hole in it. In CH I would imagine the esthetic's nazi's would get to you

When I had this problem I just drilled a few holes in the wall and knocked them into one. When leaving I filled the hole with that plastic building foam that you spray in the hole & it expands & hardens. Then you scrape it flat to the wall, blodge some wall filler over it to give a smooth finish & then a brushfull of some suitable paint. Took maybe 30 minutes & most of that was waiting for the foam to harden.

You could do it with perspex to get a better look but I'd just tell the neighbours to go play in traffic.

You mean you get a better look because you can see through perspex?

Re: How do you keep your house cool?

Forget AC - even if you manage to get the pipe outside, you will get water dripping out of and someone will compain. Not to mention the cost of the unit and the power consumption.

If you have roof windows and no outside shutters for them, put room darkening blinds on them on the inside. You can modify any roller blind - I have done so. This will keep out a lot of heat,.

Standing fans help circulate the air. Ceiling fans are better as we found out and you can buy a model that includes a light and works with remote. It's not different to installing a light in terms of the number of holes you need to fill when you move.

So I guess this be a good time to sell my standing fans.

Re: How do you keep your house cool?

help: we have a skylight above the stairs and it bakes the house like melba toast! any recommendations for skylight blinds or covers? it is quite high, so it will have to work with a remote or something...

Is it a window, possibly by Velux, or a skylight that doesn't open?

Post a picture if you can, that will help.

Re: How do you keep your house cool?

I went to the breakers yard and purchased all of the car doors and placed them around the house. Now if it gets really hot I can wind down all of the windows at once.

Re: How do you keep your house cool?

I'm a Finn, I'm used to Saunas. I live under the "combles", i.e. my slanted roof that faces the sun, is just above my head. My living room is a VERY tall room with the ceiling hiiigh above me (8 meters above me or so).

The place gets warm/hot in summer, but I don't really mind. I may sweat a little, but I just drink a bit more to keep myself alive

After a while you get used to it...

One other thing I have found is if I try to cool off with a cold shower, not only is it unpleasant but I feel 10 times hotter when I have got out of the shower.

My tip is to have a lukewarm shower then you don't feel like you are stepping out of the shower into a blast furnace.
Yes I find that is best as well. We also open the east facing windows around 7 pm but keep the westward closed until around 10 pm.

If you have a house then agreed it is best to open the attic window as the roof keeps an awful lot of heat up there which comes through the bedroom ceilings.

Use a wide roll of aluminium kitchen foil and sticky tape?

Migros camping sell the double sided rescue sheets, (Folded up into a small packet). One side is silver and reflects heat, the other side is gold and attracks heat. It measures about 1 meter by 2 meters. I keep one in the car and when I have to park in the sun I quickly spread the sheet across the dash (silver side upwards) up to the sun visors and cover the sunnier side windows.

How do you keep your flat or house cool?
Do you keep an upstairs or loft window open to "let out the hot air" and a downstairs window/door slightly ajar to "let in fresh air"?
Or do you shut all the windows and blinds after 9am to "keep the cool air inside"?
Turne on the AC
