Oberrieden -any experience living here?

We are a couple with a baby - recently moved to Zurich and considering an apartment in Oberrieden. The apartment is perfect in terms of layout but we wonder about small town living especially being new here and being a stay-at-home mom.

Wondering other people's experiences living in Oberrieden - pros & cons?

Was it easy to socialize and have playdates for children? Accessibility to the city and amenities?

Thanks!

Re: Oberrieden -any experience living here?

I lived for 10 years in Thalwil, which is the next and larger town ("larger" is relative: pop 17,000) towards Zurich.

Oberrrieden is a very nice area. Not as well connected as Thalwil and has the benefit - or perhaps disadvantage of two rail stations.

Though a little out of the city, there are plenty of expats in the area and good highway connections to the mountains.

That's about all I remember about the place...

Thanks for your input, AbFab. I did find Oberrieden very green yet quite sleepy.

Re: Oberrieden -any experience living here?

we went to visit a friend there one sleepy sunday as they have just had a baby and moved there recently out of the city - think they find it very quiet and not many places to walk too - no supermarket / bakery etc close by - always have to get in the car or on the train.

we live in the city with our 21 month old and happy we live in the city that we have the option for noise or no noise - plus we don't own a car so the city is best for us - plus easier to walk to places for coffee / brunch / selection of playgrounds

Re: Oberrieden -any experience living here?

I lived in Thalwil for about 6 years and often went to Oberrieden for running / walking. I find the town charming and quiet. It is well connected to Zurich with couple of trains - about 15 min. Though nearby Thalwil and Horgen are better connected as the fast trains also stop at those stations.

If fast access to city by train is important to you - try Thalwil or Horgen.
But if you like very peace, quiet, green then Oberrieden is good.

Huh, excuse me? Oberrieden has Coop and Migrolino at one of its train stations. The small commune also has the locally known bakeries: Kollibeck and Vetterli.

To the OP, we live very close to Oberrieden, and can't praise the small commune enough. It's very green and charming. I often take my LO for a stroll along Oberrieden area. And while our commune has two Badi, we choose to go the Badi in Oberrieden instead. It's one of the best Badi along the Silver Coast. It's very family-friendly. But then again it depends on what kind of lifestyle that you're into. We like the quite, and close-to-the-nature, neighbourhood. We had lived in the city before, and don't miss it at all (well, ZH city isn't that far with train. But then again Oberrieden probably doesn't have the best train connections compared to Thalwil and Horgen, despite having two train stations!).

If you are looking for convenience Thalwil is better choice I think.

Re: Oberrieden -any experience living here?

I just believe you might consider what you wish/want/need.

If what you wish is peaceful leaving, pop out of the door and have great walks and you don't care too much if you don't have lots of buying opportunities (well, the base ones are there...) then, go for it. Oberrieden is just a great nice small town, perfect for quiet families

I've been living some time in Zurich, then moved in a "village" and I'm very happy of it...commuting in Switzerland isn't too much of an issue from most of reasonable places
