White spirit...

...is there such a thing in Switzerland? If so, what is it called and where do I buy it? And if not, what can I use instead? I am after something that will gently remove excess polish off a table (I was a bit over-zealous with the application of the Antiquax). I've had no luck in my local iron-meyer, where they had not heard of white spirit and directed me to acetone, which I fear will be way too strong.
Thank you

Terpentine-ersatz or Petroleum Spirits (sold as a fuel for space heaters), available in any place that sells paint. Coleman Fuel (available in Coop or Migros et al) is Naptha, which is one stage hotter than Terpentine for what you're trying to do.

Acetone would take pretty much everything off. Have you tried Brennsprit? (Alcohol)

Thank you. I knew you'd have the answer! I have't tried Brennsprit, no. Do you think I should try that before the turps or petroleum spirits?

Try a white cotton cloth test with all 3 on a hidden area.

As a rule, Alc will clean, degrease, dissolve shellac and some waxes, but will take many water based stains with it.

Naptha is similar, it will dissolve any waxes, but take less stain with it.

Both Alc and Naptha evaporate very fast.

Petroleum Spirits (the heater fuel/turpentine/Varsol stuff) doesn't evaporate as fast, takes a bit longer to dissolve waxes, and doesn't generally remove much stain.

I sometimes use both Petroleum and one of the hotter ones at the same time, soaking the rag first with one, then immediately with the other when I'm trying to freshen up a waxed finish. It's a matter of trial and error.

Terps isn't so bad, but if you use the other two in an unventilated space you'll get high as a kite in no time flat. Be careful about ignition sources too.

A quick update: the terpentine-ersatz worked a treat, thank you. I first put some brown wrapping paper on top of the table, then ran a hot iron over it, which seemed to absorb a lot of the excess polish. Thanks again for your words of wisdom

Great!

So all you need to do now is go and get a new Iron, or clean the sole with Acetone. If you're a hetero guy... do this before your wife comes home...

A "shop iron" is a good thing to have.
