is there any kind of university housing for researchers/junior faculty?

Hi, I am starting my 3-yr job with UNIL Oct 1 but a bit worried about housing options. I know little about Lausanne. In US universities, there are sometimes housing options provided to grad students or junior faculty with family. Seems no such thing in Lausanne.

I know my permit B1 is being processed. It started in May. I should hope to obtain it before Oct 1. But before working for 3 months, I could not even sign a lease of any kind???

If you haven't asked the Human Resources department at the university about temporary housing, I would do this first. We were able to stay in a visiting faculty apartment when my husband started his post doc at ETH. It's a different university, so obviously may not apply, but never hurts to ask!

Thanks!
I did, a month ago. She hasn't got back to me.

I wonder if Merges is an option...

Re: is there any kind of university housing for researchers/junior faculty?

Temporary/short term housing through EPFL/UNIL is generally reserved for students, so for post-PhD folks things are trickier. There is one option I am aware of:

https://logement.epfl.ch/rooms-estudiantines

But if there is something available I'd advise moving very quickly as there is rarely space. Airbnb is also a good option and there is a group on facebook: LAUSANNE louer - bouche oreille that is the most likely way to actually find a place in my experience, although it is generally necessary to be in place to secure something through that.

Also, I wouldn't expect an overly useful response from anyone at the University who you're dealing with in a formal capacity. The Lausanne housing market is insanely competitive and there is simply too many people coming through the universities for admin to effectively do anything. Informal ties are much more likely to turn something up (sublet, grad students looking for a roommate, etc).

Technically it is possible to sign a lease with a gerance before 3 months, but it will be extremely difficult if you are just cold applying for an apartment without a complete dossier. Getting a guarantor would help with that though. Also, the requirements for subletting, while legally the same, are applied much more loosely (i.e. a contract with a reputable employer may be accepted in place of 3 pay slips).

Yes, thank you for the info!
I am aware of the required paperworks, which could be difficult. I will begin to search if academic faculty or staff have some leads. As you said, the sublease tends to be more relaxed.

One more question, this website is awesome, but would the owner usually be okay with new faculty not able to provide all the legal documents right away? We will have our resident permit but the bank statement has to wait a bit for obvious reasons. Thanks!
