How to get rid of old furniture?

Hi All, I am getting ready to buy a new sofa, so of course I will need to get rid of the old one. It's still relatively comfortable but has some noticeable stains. Any suggestions for what to do with it? If I were in the US I would call Salvation Army, or the Boy Scouts or any of a number of charitable organizations to take it away and sell for their benefit... I believe where I live, the community would not approve if I just put it outside with a "gratis" sign on it...

Re: How to get rid of old furniture?

First, ask if the retailer you are buying your new sofa from has a recycling/removal service. Many do. Some offer this gratis with purchase, others charge you to take the old sofa away.

If the retailer does not offer this, ask at the Gemeinde how 'Sperrgut' is handled. In my village, we can arrange for large items to be disposed of for a per m2 price. Your Gemeinde website likely has instructions, if not simply call the Umwelt folks and ask.

You can also ask local Brockis (like a Good Will or Salvation Army store) if they could take the sofa, but as you mention it is stained you might not find any takers. Generally these days Brockis are quite selective in what furniture they are willing to take, and pieces need to be in very good condition. But asking wouldn't hurt...

Re: How to get rid of old furniture?

This is what I did recently for several items to get rid of (tables, chairs, sofas of different sizes, etc ...)

(in no particular order)

1) Post them as gratis in tutti, anibis, englishforums. It pays off to have good and clear pictures.

2) I asked the gemainde. In Bern, you can schedule a day with the gemainde. Then, I dropped the item in the street with an sticker (that I printed myself) stating that the item is for collection for the recycling department of the gemainde (I cant remember the german word ). They will charge me per kg.I estimated around 15CHF for a 2 seater sofa-bed, around 40kg I believe, but I cant remember the prices.

3) I went with pictures to the different brockies (Salvation Army, Blue cross etc ...). I was not lucky.

4) For things that fitted in my car, I took them to the recycling center (and I paid to deposit it there)

5) I left some stuff in the street. I was lucky the items were picked up within hours. If they dont get pick in 24h, I was thinking of getting them back home.

To me, the option that I was more surprised and glad on how it works, was posting the items for FREE in tutti/anibis and englishforums. In my case, I could distribute things using the 3 sites, so, I would say, it pays off to post the same item in the 3 sites (it is free and quite quick).

Re: How to get rid of old furniture?

Usually, the Migros and the coop have a blackboard where you can post items. Pictures are definitely an advantage. I got rid of my old sofa within a day, there. This also has the advantage that whoever contacts you will live nearby, so that pickup is usually no problem.

Re: How to get rid of old furniture?

We got rid of most of our furniture and household goods (old kitchen utensils etc.) through the Protestant and Catholic churches who came by the house and picked it up (for free of course). They donate it to struggling families and new immigrants as well as sell them in jumble sales to raise money. Try them.

Re: How to get rid of old furniture?

I have used Ricardo and also the Market Place forum of EF if you expect any price.
To sell quickly, just think about realistic prices because new furniture in Zurich/CH is only becoming cheaper due to ongoing sales/imports and a competitive market.

There is always an option to dispose them of via a Moving (Umzug/Entsorgung) company. I used following and they were good but most of them provide similar service and charges are around 50 CHF/m3

Re: How to get rid of old furniture?

1) Sell it or give it away for cheap/free on tutti or anibis or Ricardo
2) Put it outside near the trash bins with a sign "gratis zum Mitnehmen" (it's acceptable everywhere, but I wouldn't leave it there for longer than a week if no one takes it)
3) Have it picked up as Sperrgut
4) Bring it to a "Sammelstelle" (trash disposal centers), though this might be a hassle depending on the size and what car you have or don't have available
5) Bring it to/have it picked up by Brockenhaus (www.brocki.ch)

Re: How to get rid of old furniture?

we just did this and the process is very simple. left the old sofa on the street over the weekend after taking the delivery of the new sofa.
the old sofa is in 2 pieces and someone in need took one piece by sunday. this morning i pasted the spergut stickets bought from the gemainde for the remaining piece.

important advise given by the gemainde is not to leave the stickers on the old furniture over the weekend as the pick up van comes only during the week and someone can steal the stickers.

cheers
