Is Lausanne safe?

Hi
my teenager nice is going to attend a summer course ( 3 weeks) at UNIL next month. She is plannng to stay in Planette Bleue at Rue Geneve, 70. Is it a bad neighborhood? If it is, what would you recommend? Thank you for your advise

I'm sure she'll be fine. Lausanne (and Switzerland in general) is quite safe.

Re: Is Lausanne safe?

I've been in Lausanne for almost 3 years, and still haven't found a 'bad neighbourhood' yet. I hope your niece has lots of fun here.

Re: How bad is the neighborhood around "Rue de Genève?

My concern is that I read in the internet "I guess the scariest area in Lausanne might be somewhere after the Flon on the "Rue de Genève"..."
So, I wonder how bad is the neighborhood around Rue de Genève 70?
How is there at night? Is better to look for another place for my niece?
Tks

Re: Is Lausanne safe?

Umm I find this whole country quite safe. Lausanne is safe as well. I frequently go around that area alone at night walking to my car or to a pub or whatnot. She will be fine.

I have a friend who lived at planète bleue for more than a year and she says it was perfectly fine. The appartments are very cool too.

Re: Is Lausanne safe?

It depends on what you mean by scary. There are no bad neighborhoods in the American sense of places where "middle class" people are afraid to go. There are neighboorhoods, or in the case of Lausanne a single plaza which is overrun by junkies. This is not rue de Geneve. The plaza with the junkies is still frequented by the bourgeois, so I don't much worry about it, and walk through with the kids all the time.

I think rue de Geneve is a little scary because people drive too fast. There tends to be a lot of Saturday night traffic. Other than that it's fine. Usually if I give them a good stare in the license plate they slow down.

Anyhow I live just above there on rue des Terreaux, and frankly it's not a problem... at all.

Lady Switzerland is as safe as it gets No drive by shootings or no go zones here. Just typical common sense safety precautions one needs to take.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the prostitution 'scene' over there, which other posters conveniently forgot to mention so far.

People are rarely attacked by prositutes, unless they ask them to.

No, but a young woman walking home might be hassled by men cruising along in their cars.

I wouldn't say that makes it a 'bad' area though, and I think that is a slighlty different location from the area of Planete Bleue. It all seems to be done in a very Swiss, orderly way, and if anything the extra people standing around on street corners make the place safer because there are witnesses to anything that might happen.

Does that mean it's unsafe? I've walked through Sevelin alone on Friday and Saturday nights and I've never felt in any remote amount of danger. (And for the record, I was never harassed from a car window there either). A lot of people seem to confuse being in an unfamiliar or intimidating situation with being in a dangerous situation, but there is a big difference between the two. It's true that some neighbourhoods don't quite match the image of Switzerland as a postcard-perfect place where there streets are spotless, everyone is rich and lives in an immaculate apartment, and no one has any problems, but that doesn't mean they are bad places.

Heather

I do not know the place, I've never been there. So my question is: is it a safe place for a teenager to venture out late at night ? Would you allow your teenager daughter to do that?

Re: Is Lausanne safe?

I would suggest locking up your daughters this weekend as there is likely to be public order problems around the Vidy area and they would be in serious danger of having a good-time.

I worked in that area for a year, no problem. As other posters said, Lausanne is pretty safe, there's never been a time where either I or my girlfriend alone felt unsafe here. Of course 0% risk does not exist but I think we're as close as possible.
