Renting Across the Border In France - Minimum Let

Hi All

Hope someone can help me.

I am coming out to Geneva in September to start a new contract. Initially the contract will run til Christmas - but hopefully will be extended beyond that.

Does anyone know - Is it possible to rent somewhere for less than a 6th Month period - preferably in France due to cheaper rents ?

Thanks in advance.

Plenty of holiday lets & air B&B, prices will be higher than an ongoing period. Short let of 6 months is almost unheard of in CH as people rent property for many years.

Sure it's cheaper, but you are taxed where you live not where you work, think about the time wasted travelling and the costs involved.

Is it really cheaper.....not a lot, i think.

Look very carefully at your health insurance options if you live in France. And also at unemployment benefits- should you contract be extended beyond the 6 months - and you later lose your job for one reason or other- it could make a huge difference.

Today only is spot on. False economies.

You'd also need to check if you'd be eligible for a Swiss G (cross border) permit.

Since your main residence will be in the UK still I guess (you plan to go back there at weekends?) I'm not sure you could rent over the border and get the permit which is the only one possible if you don't reside in Switzerland.

A great deal depends on if the OP retains a residence in the UK, he will be liable to UK taxation if he is only away for 6 months regardless of availability of accommodation for the 6 months in question..
