Upholstering a couch - know someone ?

Hello all,

I have a very old white leather couch in desperate need of re upholstering, anyone know who can do this or where I can find someone that does this sort of work ? The furniture shop's official guy is charging almost as much as the couch is worth on sale, must be a cheaper solution out there

thanks

J

Sadly, I have not found an affordable solution in Switzerland. From my searching around, you are actually lucky to find a price 'only' almost as much as the price of a new couch... Most quotes I have had were several times the price of new.

Is the couch easily transportable? If so, start looking for someone outside of Switzerland. But figure transport costs, customs duties, etc in to your calculations.

I wish there were an affordable solution, I hate tossing out something useable.

Most of my Swiss friends go with slip covers as long as they can. One handy friend is taking a course in reupholstery at the local adult education center, that was the only option she could find. If you are of a DIY mind, you might consider something similar.

Once past slip cover stage the pieces I want to recover go into the cellar, when I have enough to justify a container they will be shipped back home where reupholstery is still a sensible option.

Italy.

Probelem with Italy is that you will have to pay both Italian and Swiss VAT, however, as Italy doesn't do VAT refund on work or installed products

Because labour rates in Switzerland are so high it would be cheaper for you to dump the old sofa and buy another on EF, Ricardo, or ebay.

- Is the sofa high quality? Is it worth the investment?
- Look for "polsterer" or "polsterei" outside the city on local.ch. You can find craftsmen working at a reasonable cost.
- Try to see if it's the cushions that need upholstering or if it's the woven strips of webbing underneath that needs some fixing/tension.
