sublet: who is responsible for routine maintenance costs?

We sublet our apartment last year for 5 months and the contract included this:

"Subtenant takes financial responsibility for routine maintenance not the responsibility of the Regie, eg plumbing." That is to say, if it was a bill that would normally be the responsibility of the tenant, it would now be the responsibility of the subtenant, given that the subtenant is basically subject to the same rules as the tenant.

I've just given the same contract to a prospective subtenant for a forthcoming period (5 months again) and she questioned this, saying it wasn't fair.

I'm inclined to agree with her and I'm not even sure why we put it in the last contract - maybe somebody told us?

Opinions from people who know about what is normal/correct in sublets are very welcome!
