Rümlang - commute to Zurich Enge

Good morning everyone

I'm moving to Zurich early in 2018, and I've been looking for a sub-let or room for the first 4-6 months of the year, whilst I look for something permanent for me and my family.

I've found a flat in Rümlang, which is not too far from the Airport (well, from Google maps it looks as if it's virtually under the Airport!), which would suit my requirements very well... except that I'm going to be working at the Tessinerplatz (i.e. next to the Zurich Enge station), and I'm not sure how it would be to commute in from Rümlang to Zurich Enge every day.

Any of you out there who could give me some first-hand experience of how that commute might work out in practice? (Just for background, I'm originally from London, so my idea of a "bad" commute is only anything over an hour!)

Many thanks all

Re: Rümlang - commute to Zurich Enge

If you type in your address and your work address, you will see how to get there and how long it takes.

And yes, Rümlang is very much near the airport

It shall take 30-40 min.

There are quite some flats available around Enge tho -

Near Google there are nice flats too, but of course depends on your budget!

Re: Rümlang - commute to Zurich Enge

Thanks, alohahw and roegner!

Yes, when I checked, it also looked to me like a 30-40 minute commute, but I was fretting that this might in reality become a 50-60 minute commute if the connections aren't great. But maybe I was considering the whole thing through British eyes, as I know that usually connections work quite smoothly in Switzerland from past experience.

I was also wondering about holding out for a more convenient flat location, but I really just want a flat for Jan-Jun 2018, and there's not an enormous selection if I'm being picky on the period. I've been looking at ronorp.net, but if you have any tips for short-term rental searches, they would be more than gratefully received!

Re: Rümlang - commute to Zurich Enge

Rumlang is near the airport, but it takes less than 30 minutes to get from Enge to the airport by public transport. Not sure if Rumlang really has an advantage.

I use public transport daily and I can count on one hand the number of days that my commute was delayed by more than 15 minutes in the past few years.

Re: Rümlang - commute to Zurich Enge

Thanks all for your input, that's been very helpful. It's going to take me a while to find my bearings in Zurich as I'm not too familiar with that part of Switzerland (was in Suisse romande before), and I appreciate your insights. I'll take a look at the ums.ch website, that could also be useful for me.

Re: Rümlang - commute to Zurich Enge

40 minutes only if you're slow or have really unfortunate connections.

15mins by train from Rümlang main station plus max 10mins on another train, quick walk in between.

If the flat's not actually Rümlang (village), but at the airport and close to the airport train station, you're looking at 15mins on one train.

Tessinerplatz is literally at Enge, so it's not even a real walk - just have to leave the station and you're there.

Also, it's Switzerland, so for example buses actually wait in case the train is delayed... As in more than a minute delayed Which happens like a couple dozen times a year (yes, across all of Switzerland) and is front-page news every time You will find nowhere near what you're used to from London here.

Zero problem doing this every day. It barely qualifies as a commute, particularly not in case you're actually in walking distance (or one or two bus stops) to the airport and can hop on the direct train there.

Re: Rümlang - commute to Zurich Enge

I was in Opfikon yesterday (minutes from Rümlang) and a plane passed us .... meters from us
I was fascinated, I admit, it almost felt like I could touch it and was told "oh, it's always like that here". I definitely wouldn't want to live/try to sleep there.
