Lack of radiators / heating in apartment

A couple of weeks ago I viewed an apartment in Zurich while the weather was mild and I sent in an application for it this week.

But now that the weather has turned cold I looked at the pics of the apartment again and realised that neither the living room or bedrooms have any radiators. So as I've already viewed it when the weather was mild I'm worried that the place will be really cold during the winter months.

So some questions:

- if an apartment is cold is it up to the landlord to provide adequate heating? Or could they turn around and say tough luck you've already signed the contract?
- it's on the top (3rd) floor of the building. Is it possible that the apartments on the floors below would provide enough heat (they say that apartments on top floors get the rising heat from apartments below)?

TIA

Re: Lack of radiators / heating in apartment

The apartment probably has underfloor heating.

Unless you saw an enormous tiled object in the corner of the living room, in which case you'd better get used to having splinters...

Re: Lack of radiators / heating in apartment

If no radiators are visible this is an indication of underfloor heating, common in Switzerland...and really far better as every wall is freed up for you to place furniture where you like.

As others have said, definitely underfloor heating - the Swiss are real wimps when it comes to heating their homes. They have to be hot and absolutely draught-free.

And donīt worry about heating! Most of the time my neighbours heat more than enough so that my heating is off

Re: Lack of radiators / heating in apartment

Great Noddy link the man is a legend.. and he became quite the actor back in the nineties and noughties.

Getting back on track I'd be surprised if there's underfloor heating as the apartment is pretty old. The kitchen and bathroom weren't done up with the other rooms and they're showing their age.

I've attached a pic of the living room with new floor (looks like cheap laminate). What are the chances of that room having underfloor heating??

Not in our first accommodation here! Froze our tits! Old, underperforming electric heaters that cost a fortune to run. We had one stove that helped us survive the Winter. Good job we were hardy Brits with years of experience in draughty, single glazing window panels and erratic central heating (understand, none in bedrooms and a pull-string heater in bathroom)...but god that gas fire used to keep us warm! None of that in CH.

Now we've got our own place with geothermal and solar heating and underfloor heating, I had to wait for my late 40s to experience walking bare feet on a warm floor in the winter! Love it!

I tend to think that your estimate is still on the low side.

mmmmmm... nice!

It's 5.6 degrees in the stairwell. I think I'll keep my slippers on.

Which is why my Swiss wife turns off the radiators and leaves the doors and windows open all day in winter.

Awww, he should have told us. We would all have eaten tons of cherries and made him cherrie-bags for the bed.
