Modernist furniture - where to sell?

Hi there, it's a bit of a random question. I have some modernist Finnish furniture which I bought in the UK. However, it doesn't go with my home so I would like to sell it.

Does anyone know of any specialist sales at auction houses (either in CH or over the border) or specialist dealers who would be interested and likely to make a sensible offer?

Many thanks
CW

Re: Modernist furniture - where to sell?

This is a question I'm also collaterally interested in. I personally don't know of any such a sensible enterprise in the German part at least, other than the local Brockenhaus guys who can come, evaluate your stuff and make you an offer. Don't think they're the right kind of people for dealing with more special furniture though, so their offer could be way bellow your expectations, but you can try.
Have you tried selling it on one of those sites - tutti, ricardo etc?

Re: Modernist furniture - where to sell?

You could also post some pictures on here. There are some wealthy forum users always looking for reasonably priced designer furniture. Don't expect dealers to offer a decent price as they want to make profits. And auction houses will take a sizeable percentage.

Re: Modernist furniture - where to sell?

I thought it's probably too specialist for the Brocki's.

There are some specialist retailers in Zürich so many the answer is to get on Shanks' pony and take a wander around town. There's no rush to sell it, fortunately.

Re: Modernist furniture - where to sell?

Dedpends how valuable it is.

There are some very high-end actioneers in Zürich, but unfortunately not much for the middle range. But I am sure there are some dealerships out there if you look hard enough.

Re: Modernist furniture - where to sell?

I assume you are talking about designer pieces people recognize? I assume they aren't period originals? Modern production by the companies that have the rights? Or are we talking about "very inspired by but not actually Le Corbusier" type of furniture?

There are some hipster second hand stores in Zurich and if you tell them its mid century modern they probably love it... but they would want their Vitra pieces to be actually made by Vitra.

Re: Modernist furniture - where to sell?

It's three pieces from a Pirkka dining set by Ilmari Tapiovaara.

However, I am conscious of the Mods since this is not a section to sell in, so no pics.

Well, I think that would work with hipsters. I believe there is even one specializing on mid century Scandinavian stuff, but cannot remember.

Re: Modernist furniture - where to sell?

Have a look at this site. It seems to be a sales site for high end designer furniture.

I have not scanned the site to see how it works, pricing etc. but they have some pieces from the same designer. The link I have below shows some of the pieces for sale.

If I might be so bold, what sort of price level are we looking at here?

On the link I posted, the 4 chair set is going for over CHF 1'000 per chair! This site seems to be oriented to high-end designers/interior architects working for clients and are looking for special pieces.

The OP is selling three pieces that belong to a dinning set. So, depending on what they are, their age, condition etc. the price could be relatively high.

Re: Modernist furniture - where to sell?

That designer makes very nice looking items.

As you have sold several items on EF, perhaps it's worth giving it a go with these ones, unless you are unsure of their worth and want to get an opinion from a store.

Good luck.

Might be best to wait for a bit until it becomes fashionable again.

Re: Modernist furniture - where to sell?

Looking at the link, I would describe those as postmodern. For those who want to know how to tell the difference, it's quite simple:

Modern - function over form

Postmodern - who cares?

Re: Modernist furniture - where to sell?

1stdibs is great for identification, but don't use them for accurate pricing. It's a conglomerate website of a bunch of NY dealers used by decorators and other dealers. 99% of the time the pieces are sold at the trade price which is about 50% off.

Use ebay if you want to actually see what real people will pay for midcentury modern furniture (and everything else, really). For example, here's four pieces of the Pirkka line going for 2900 GBP. There are 13 people watching this listing but no one yet is paying that amount, which tells you something.

BTW, OP, nice furniture. His rocking chair is one of his most popular pieces. Do you have one of those?

No, just the dining table, chair and bench. They make a nice set especially with the contrast between the natural wood and lacquer.
