Does your landlord supply a clothes dryer in your laundry room?

Hello there,

I wanted to inquire whether or not our laundry setup is similar to any of you, as for of my friends and colleagues, it is not.

Our laundry room in our apartment building does not supply a clothes dryer, just a washer and a room to hang our laundry with a useless fan.

I have repeatedly asked our landlord if we could have one only to be declined. I know that all of my neighbors want one as well. Our landlord simply refuses stating that it would be too expensive. He has lied and said that he asked my fellow neighbors if they would be willing to pay a little extra rent each month for one, but they have all denied this. (Maybe they are lying too, who knows..but I doubt it.)

I would be happy to put one in my apartment, but there is no space/place for it. My husband and I both work full time and are actively involved in fitness. Therefore, we have loads of laundry and not enough time to hang each and every sock and piece of underwear on a daily basis.

Is this communal laundry setup common in CH? If so, what do you do to cope? Is there anyway that I can take my case further with the landlord?

Thanks!

Re: Does your landlord supply a clothes dryer in your laundry room?

We have all washing machines and dryers in the flat and a space downstairs to hang the washing with a fan.

Never had a place without a dryer. But then the landlord is not obliged to have one in the building.

Make space for one!

Trust me I would love to, even willing to spend big cash to remove the toilet in our spare half bath, but our landlord has forbidden this.

Re: Does your landlord supply a clothes dryer in your laundry room?

In both apartments we've had, there was a washer and dryer in the laundry room, plus an area to dry clothes. I'd much prefer to dry clothes outside in summer, but this wouldn't be allowed.

I prefered the system we had in the old apartment, where we had a card that you inserted into the dryer, which ensured that each apartment was billed for the time that they used it.

Nope, dryers are not installed everywhere.

Re: Does your landlord supply a clothes dryer in your laundry room?

Been in a few apartments in my time here, and it really does depend on the building. I've had ones with tumble dryers, drying rooms with a big jet engine type fan and drying rooms with no fan at all, just a small window.

So it's hard to say what's standard.

Hey there!

We have the same card - our landlord just doesn't want to spend the money to buy and install one.

An apartment building without a dryer? WTF.

I would genuinely move if none was installed in my building.

Perhaps you could persuade your landlord to get one of these new-fangled appliances:

Doing something on your own is probably the easiest if you can technically do it.

Installing a dryer with a system where the water goes into a plastic container in the machine (needs to be emptied) or via a tube into the shower, sink or toilet should not be too difficult.

Do you have enough room to build a wooden frame over the toilet (maybe a photo of two of the bathroom would help)? Is there a shower in the second bathroom? If so, could you fit one in it? If so, an inexpensive dryer such as the link might work. It is "only" 48kg so a reasonable wooden structure would hold it since a dryer does not vibrate like a washer.

One inexpensive Siemens dryer (you have the dimensions at the bottom)

https://www.pc-ostschweiz.ch/product...parnr=12833201

I do not think that the owner can say anything about a dryer (but he can for a washer with the flooding risk).

Re: Does your landlord supply a clothes dryer in your laundry room?

If you have a balcony, you can pick a new dryer up for 3- 400 chf.
Will bump up the electricity bill and you will have to switch it off at 22.00 and find a socket with the right ampage.
Our dryer has a condensor, so you can put it anywhere. Bought it from Comforama many years ago and it still works - as long as I remove all the fluff and empty the water.
Takes ages to dry stuff. Better outside on hangers in good weather or on the radiators.

Re: Does your landlord supply a clothes dryer in your laundry room?

Thanks guys.

Trust me, the will is there to make it work if there was any chance to. We have the tiniest full bathroom with a shower and one half bathroom with a toilet that barely has enough room for your legs let alone a dryer. No balcony either.

Looks like we may need to move one day which is hard as we have an incredible wrap around view of the Rhine but no conveniences...

Re: Does your landlord supply a clothes dryer in your laundry room?

Ask your landlord if you can put your own dryer in the washing place (with a lock) and offer some money for the electric used.
You never know!

Re: Does your landlord supply a clothes dryer in your laundry room?

I once used my oven to dry my socks. However, I do not recommend this on a regular basis
Kitchen is a good option for a dryer - maybe under the table. But they are quite noisy.
Do you have a cellar as part of your rent? Maybe in there.

Re: Does your landlord supply a clothes dryer in your laundry room?

Really there is no spot anywhere in our apartment, even in the kitchen unless we were to completely rebuild the setup and that would be hard and way too expensive. Cellar has no outlet...but is big enough for sure, no water connection either. Meh, I give up - thanks so much guys for the tips! Now I have a better picture...

Make a platform above the toilet and place it on that. Cheaper than removing and reinstalling a toilet.

We have 7 apartments, 2 washing rooms with each a washer and a dryer, and two drying rooms (that make the cloths all dry in about 3 hours)

We don't give up easily. You have the dimensions of the machine I suggested. Check the dimensions of the toilet room. It will fit. You may/will need to remove the door. Use a heavy curtain instead. Will cut down on the noise. Put the door in the locker. We can discuss how to do the support for the dryer. Put the drain hose into the toilet. Photos would help.

EDIT: When checking the width of the bathroom you are taking the width of the door (at it's narrowest). Hopefully this width will be enough so you do not have to take off the small moulding strips that are on the sides. The machine is only 60cm wide after all.

I would also go for a new machine that is more energy efficient and probably more effective in drying than a machine that is 4+ years old.

I understand you'd like a dryer and that the laundry hanging space isn't suitable. But did I miss something? Is there a reason why you can't just use a foldaway drying rack in your flat?
