Newbie here. Advice on places to live near Basel or Zurich or between .

My daughter and partner are moving to Switzerland in September. They need to be able to get into Zurich and Basel, they will have a car, but happy to use public transport. Where are best areas, ? They are a young couple no kids. They want to rent initially, but will be able to consider buying( inheritance) where are good places to start the search. Many thanks

Re: Newbie here. Advice on places to live near Basel or Zurich or between .

Car to both cities will be atrocious, ie I would strongly suggest on a place with good public transport.

If they're going to live in a suburb, that will mean quick transportation to the city nearby, but having to change train to the other one. Living in the city center of either city will be fairly expensive.

Alternatively, I'd suggest to be living in Olten. It's a very quick ride to Basel, and a quick one to Zürich.

Living in Olten is cheaper than either Basel or Zürich, both for rent as well as eating out. Olten isn't fancy at all, but for a few years at the start, it will be a good starting point. You're really quickly everywhere, since it's literally in the (transport) centre of Switzerland.

The transport times to both Basel and Zurich do seem very quick from Olten

Baden is imo a good option and of course by public transport as car into either direction will be a nightmare during rush hour. There's direct trains to both from Baden.

Personally I don't like the Olten/Solothurn area, but they are decent alternatives and different strokes and all...

Live nearer the city where they have further to travel from the main station. If living nearer Basel you can get a U-Abo (season ticket valid for the TNW area) for considerably less than a GA (season ticket valid for the whole of Switzerland).

I would live in one of the two cities.
A place in the middle of nowhere doesn't make sense. Also because then you will always need to travel.

Re: Newbie here. Advice on places to live near Basel or Zurich or between .

Theres a proverb about olten. "In Olte läbt me ned in Olte stigt me om"

Roughly and badly translatet to: One does not live in Olten, Olten is for changing trains.

I feel like Olten is better than its reputation. But I've grown up near Olten and am a bit biased.

Theres even a song about Olten

Im Zug ab Basel Richtig hei
schtaaht si vor mir und fragt "Isch da no frei?"
Ich nicke nur, mit offnem Muul

Vorem Fäischter Basel Land
doch das isch itze nid so intressant
ich gseh nur si, so ne Schööni
Churz vor Olten schtaat si uuf
schtiigt zur Türe uus

Für dich würd ich uf Olten zieh
Houptsach mir chönd zäme sii
Für dich würd ich uf Olten zieh
wes unbedingt müesst sii

I blibe hocke bis Lozärn
doch was wär gsi wenn ich in Olten blube wär
Wämer eis go nä und hätsch mer d Nummre gä
Hätte diskutiert bis id Nacht
no bi dir diheime Spaghetti gmacht

Seems rather harsh ! Thank you do much , at least they can start looking in a few key places and see how they feel 😃

Thank you, i hink they will consider being in either Basel or Zurich, but they thought both travelling fairer , also availability and cost of housing in central Zurich or Basel will probably be a consideration 😊

Re: Newbie here. Advice on places to live near Basel or Zurich or between .

Another vote for Baden here.

The commute into Basel from Zurich is tiring / boring and often crowded at rush hour. Two of my neighbours work in Basel, and hate the commute, to the point that one of them has a bedsit there for during the week. Baden has surprised me more than any other town I've visited so far in Switzerland. It's a decent town with a good vibe about it, whereas Olten has a functional, industrial feel about it.

Unless you're filthy rich or already Swiss citizenship, as far as I know, they won't be able to buy anything for at least 5 years (EU citizens) or 10 years, when they can get a C permit.

For the time being I would only consider rent/transportation/niceness of the place as a factor, not so much the price of property.

Why do people write “as far as I know” then write something completely incorrect that takes 2 minutes to research?

I guess the thing to do is try and have a good look round a few places that seem well located.Baden seems popular ☺

I too would go for Baden, mainly because it's nearer to Zürich! But also it's a nice town and if they rent near the centre they can easily walk to the station. I've been to Olten a few times and I feel it is much more provincial.
