Thankyou Mrs. Doolittle! I think it is a great idea to live in a village, but I would like to live also close the kindergarten, shools, train station, etc.I think during my stay alone, I can check it !
Best regards.
Marcos

Hi Marcos, Now that you have said you are working in Dättwil, which is part of Baden, you should try and look for housing where you will have an easy commute to work. Dättwil is a very family-oriented village. However, in terms of shopping, I think you might be better off in Rütihof, another village that is also part of Baden, with good shopping, not too far from Dättwil. Both have kindergartens. From Rütihof you also have good access to the Mellingen Heitersberg station from where you can go to Zurich without going into Baden to take the train to Zurich.

What you don't really want to do is live in a village too far from the centre of Baden, where you will have to take one bus to the bus station (possibly a post bus and not a local bus) and then transfer to another bus to get to work! The traffic into Baden in the morning is very heavy, and only certain roads have bus lanes so elsewhere the bus sits in traffic - and you will too. Depending on where you live, you could cycle, but this is not for everyone.

Other areas I could recommend - the Meierhof area of Baden, which is very central, and the Baldegg area of Baden which is very family oriented and has a kindergarten.

I have read some of the posts here and there are areas recommended where I would never place anyone, and certainly not a family - but if the poster is new here, and that person does not have children, they would not have first hand knowledge about kindergarten or schools in that area. I mean no disrespect here, but a single person who has lived here for a few months could not possibly know as much as someone who has raised a family here, and has lived and worked in the area for years.

At the end of the day, if you don't speak German and you don't know the areas, you are relying on the opinions of others which you should consider very carefully.

Daetwil is reachable within 15min from Baden by bus. Good luck with your new job What do you specilize in?
Marcos,
The closest bus stop to the ABB office in Dättwil is called Segelhof. Bus # 7 stops there. The next closest bus stop would be the Kantonspital where Bus # 7 and Bus # 3 stop.

The 15 minutes quoted above is the time it takes to travel by bus from the train station in Baden to Segelhof. All the train and bus schedules can be looked up on line. www.sbb.ch

Additionally, if you look in www.mapsearch.ch if you select to view the additional features in a particular area, you can see items of interest such as schools and shopping in the area, for example. You must put in at least a postal code (an address is better) to see an area.

Hello Hsiang!! Thanks for the tip. I saw it in the maps.google.com and the Ennet Baden area looks like a nice place, it is very close to the downton and the main station in Baden, just cross the river. But I didn't find apartments to rent in this area in the internet, maybe just in the local when I will be there.
Regards.

Marcos
Hi Marcos, it might help if you approached the estate admin itself. while i was still house-hunting, i came across a few estates which i liked a lot, and contacted the admin directly. they were immobaden, regimo zürich and wincase for ennetbaden. you can check the prices, layouts and sizes on their homepages. once i even asked a complete stranger returning home from work, if i could take a peek into her apartment before i rent a place there. if you are feeling cheeky, you can do the same.

ennetbaden is lower than baden, but there's a lift from baden bhf to ennetbaden on the river. i like v much

i see you took the effort to individually reply many posts...just wnat to say, that's very nice of you

Hi, Yeah. I work for ABB and I am in Medium Volatge Drives department in Turgi. I know few people from Corporate Research in Daetwill where I had applied for similar position before. But it came out in different department although we work on similar projects just here I do control and hardware development.
Daetwil is reachable within 15min from Baden by bus. Good luck with your new job What do you specilize in?

Great! I work also with Medium Voltage Drives, but in a competitor, as Product Engineer in a factory here, but now I am moving to Project in ABB, that I think is a good opportunity to improve my career living abroad and working in good company as ABB.
Keep in touch.

Re: Baden, Wettingen or Brugg????

Hi,

Just a thought if you have a family--they are opening an international school in Baden starting in the fall, might be nice to live nearby.

I live in the very center of Baden which is great for shopping, train (I work in Zurich, there's a direct train, 15 min), etc, but can also be very loud on weekend nights and during festivals (don't even get me started about Badenfahrt). It's also very pricey. But we can get by without a car which is another consideration.

Some towns are only connected by buses, some by suburban trains (the slow ones), and the bigger towns--like Baden and Brugg have fast trains--something to consider if you'll be traveling by train at all.

Just a thought...................have you asked your company's HR department for any help in relocating? They'll probably be able to help you find something for the first three months you're over here.
Happy hunting!

Re: Baden, Wettingen or Brugg????

Check out Dattwill. It's near Baden, and has a lot of modern apartments (if you like modern place). Nice area.

Or else, Ennetbaden along the Limmatt river. Also nice place.

Hi,

Just a thought if you have a family--they are opening an international school in Baden starting in the fall, might be nice to live nearby.
The Baden campus of ZIS, the international school opening in August of 2008, is located on Burghaldenstrasse 6 which is just off the Mellingerstrasse, which is the main road. This is not a very residential area and an apartment near here would be noisy. You would have to look up in the Allmend to find a quieter place, and then the question is whether this is really within walking distance.

But there is probably little point in living near ZIS unless one has the resources for international school tuition. From my experience, most employers in the area do not pay school fees, particularly for a child entering kindergarten and especially if the employee is on a local contract, as many of the new hires to ABB and Alstom are. These are not expat jobs. However, this does not mean relocation support is not available, for example, to assist in a house search. If you don't ask, you don't get.

If you are going to send your child to local schools, it is important to take schooling into consideration when choosing where to live.

I prefer to live in a calm place but not so far from this kind of school because my wife doesn't speak german. And in the begining I will have to train or bus to go to work.

Thank you Mrs. Doolittle for the tips! It is very important for my side have the schools and kindergartens close, and I don't want to stay in a place where I have to do connections all the times in Baden to go to anyplace.
I will consider your comments.

Hey mcomartins, I work in ATD1 hardware develoopment at MV Drives on the other side of the bridge from Power Electronics group. How is your German? The ABB also provides twice a week German language courses for different levels. It is worth while to join I do it during working hours as part of the employee skills development program between 10h30 - 12h00. As far as I remember, there is also one colleague from Paraguay here and in the past there was another colleague from Brasil who worked for Corporate Research group in Dätwill, so just to give example the engineerig community is multi-national, thus makes it more fun

Hi

Is it not a little bit loud in Dättwil because of the proximity to the Autobahn and the exhaust from the tunnel? Otherwise it looks to be a nice village.

On the UMS website they currently have 4 listings in the Baden area. Beside each listing it states the availability, minimum contract length and the rent, which would not include the commission.

Did you take note of the commission fees charged by UMS? The minimal commission fee is 500 chf. For a one month term, you will pay 30% of the gross monthly rent as commission. The longer the lease period the more commission you will pay (for 10 months or more 150% of the monthly rent). Each search request costs 50 chf.

Re: Baden, Wettingen or Brugg????

I received my work permit, now I have to search as quick as possible to an apartment. I was looking in the map, and how about Turgi? I will start to work in October 1st.
Are there others cities in this area that would be a good place to live with famliy, wife and daughter?
Thanks

Hi Marco, Turgi has a population of 2,763 people, the village has very few shops and restaurants, and is rather boring IMO, although the folks there are very friendly. i would recommend Baden as a first choice. have you approached your company's HR for relocation assistance? if you need more help, i can send you some information and recommendations, just pm me.
