Rental agency asking for my religious beliefs

Unless I have embarrassingly misunderstood the meaning of "Konfession", I have seen the most surprising thing in filling rental applications so far.

Is that even legal? What if I'm not Christian at all?

Re: Rental agency asking for my religious beliefs

I am Atheist, but I always fill in Christian on such form since I tend to believe it gives me the best chance of landing the apartment. Given that large majority of this country is Christian chances of the landlord being a "fellow" Christian are higher them him being whatever else.

Then you can just write "konfessionslos" (no confession). I think, the question is illegal, but if you want that apartment...

What if they find out?

And as I understood, "Konfession" is one of "Catholic/Protestant/..", not "Christain/Muslim,.."

I think we had it on a form once too.....we said konfessionslos, because we are. We got the flat.

Why would it not be? It's also legal to lie or simply refuse to answer it, if lying goes against your religious beliefs for example.

Coincidentally, the same question was asked in today's 20Minuten:

(The columnist isn't always completely correct, mind...)

Yes, really. There's no law against it. Otherwise what, are you suggesting we jail the whole country's population? Everybody lies.

For you, with a European/Christan-looking name it is nothing. For me, it may lead to (at least) some awkward moments

Can't the agency kick you out for lying in your application?

It's really, really hard to kick people out here for anything other than non payment. (I'm a small time landlord myself.)

But easier to make their life miserable enough so that they move themselves.

Well, if you wrote "Protestant", but you're a practising cannibal, then they'll probably have a case.

No, they'll just to go to arbitration/court and get a paper saying they don't have to pay you until you fix the problem. They still have to pay rent, just not to your account. This can be really motivating for landlords.

You're really overthinking here. Renters are king in Switzerland. As long as you can pay the rent being asked.

Renters are king and emperor in countries like the Netherlands with all the protections and walking out of a filthy house and nobody can do anything about it, here they are all but king imho.

kicking out not but I heard about someone who had some trouble after claiming Christian confession.

the landlord then found out that the person broke 4 of then Ten Commandments in the following months and confronted the person with his findings. the only way he could get out of the situation was by claiming to be catholic.

Re: Rental agency asking for my religious beliefs

Konfessionlos.

There's no stigma, and even many practising Christians are legally "agnostic" if their churches are not recognised by the state.

Re: Rental agency asking for my religious beliefs

Is this seriously about people wanting to lie about their religion?
And the only thing they're worried/concerned about is whether it is illegal by earthly law?
Really?

I'll chance a telediagnosis here: You are "konfessionlos", as we don't have "what ever suits the situation" on the forms. Yet.

I'm confessionless too, so my incredulousness is purely earthly.
