All renters, including prospective renters should join an association like this.

There is Asloca in romandie.

If you have legal protection insurance (which covers tenancy law), is it still worthwhile to have the Mieterverband? I'm not clear on what the difference is and I couldn't find an answer when searching.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Mieterverband Zurich (Renters association) special offer for membership

The Mieterverband offers legal advice, free for members, discounted for non-members. This is probably more affordable that going through your legal insurance, if it has a meaningful deductible.

More broadly, they offer other housing-specific services to members.

For example, if you are worried that a landlord will try to misrepresent damages during a handover, the Mieterverband will (for a fee) send out an agent to assist. For example, there is a schedule of costs that a landlord is allowed to charge for damage, depending on the type and age of the wall/floor/whatnot. Anybody can download this schedule from the MV website, but the agent would have experience in making sure that it is correctly interpreted.

I'd say yes. The Mieterverband helps you prevent and stave off problems whereas legal insurance isn't much use until after they've arisen. Many people on here (except probably the long-time members) would probably be well advised to have a MV representative present during handover to avoid getting screwed.

If one has already a personal liability insurance, is it still make sense to buy the same insurance from the MV? The latter costs 12.- CHF per year.

I tried to figure out the exact extra benefits, but it is difficult to read contracts, as always. I can see that there is no deductible.

Re: Mieterverband Zurich (Renters association) special offer for membership

I keep my membership up despite being in a pretty good genosenschaft and never having to use them in my previous private rented apartment. I figure the very little I pay a year will go to help someone who will need them. Same with Rega even though I donít ski or spend much time in the mountains or abroad.

Re: Mieterverband Zurich (Renters association) special offer for membership

I would like to clarify that the Mieterverband is an association not a for profit business. Members join to support their cause and as a benefit are allowed legal consultations. In a way all renters benefit from this association whether they are members whose fees support their cause or not. A lot of people donít understand the concept of association here in ch and Iíve even. heard a complaintabout having to pay the 60chf fee after forgetting to cancel membership eventho that person used their legal advise to save 250 an hour for a private attorney.
