Where to live near Montessori schools and Enge

Hi!

I am moving to Zurich with my husband and 2 year old daughter. We are looking for a Montessori nursery/school and our choices would be:
- Rietberg
- D'Insle
- Sprungbrett

But I am struggling with the apartment search. My husband will be working on Enge and Rietberg school is very close, but I would like to consider also the other two schools.

We are looking for a neighborhood with families, parks for the kids, supermarket and good public transport, etc. Reading this forum I guess Thalwil, Horgen or Kilchberg would be fine for us. But they are not so close to D'Insle and Sprungbrett.

So which would be a good area to live with a commute of 15-20mins tops to Enge and D'Insle or Sprungbrett.
Any recommendations please?

Thank you in advance

Re: Where to live near Montessori schools and Enge

The best thing to do, if it is possible, is to do an observation visit to each of the three schools you're considering before you sign any contracts. All three schools have AMI-trained Montessori teachers in the classrooms. Each has a different feel, so you should visit to check which one you personally like the best.

Travel times within Zurich are not so bad to/from any of the places you mentioned. Use the SBB app (on their website - sbb.ch ) to calculate travel times by public transport, as driving into Zurich is tricky not just for traffic, but parking is difficult in most places (unless you rent a parking space).
I know a few people who live around Thalwil / Kilchberg and have children in d'Insle or Sprungbrett, it's not such a long journey (about 25 minutes) - and some of the children going to all three of the Montessori schools travel alone to primary school, some with journeys of just over half an hour on public transport for children as young as 8 or 9. Once they know the route it's simple, and most fellow commuters will help on the rare occasions they have trouble with anything. The reliable public transport connections make that simpler as well.

Good luck with your search for a place to live!

Hi araqyl,

Thank you very much for your reply.

We will definetely visit the schools before making a decision. Do you know if you can be a lot of time on the waiting lists of those schools?

We are relaying on public transport because we will not have a car, at least the first months. Although I am a bit concern of the "travel alone" phase.

I will take a look at the app.

Thanks again,
Lorena

As I understand it, your daughter is 2 years old. And you will be using public transport. That's excellent! Even if you do get a car (though you may well find that you prefer not to), by the time Daughter gets to school, in four years from now, she'll be used to travelling by train, tram and bus, (because you will have done it so many times with her) that it won't be a very big step to her travelling alone.

Hi doropfiz, the big step would be for me. I am not used to see children traveling alone and it is a bit "shocking" and scary for me, but it seems that in Switzerland is a very common thing.

Yes, I can see that. But by the time your daughter is old enough to attend school here, you, too, will have had several years to observe how things are done in Switzerland.

In case you haven't already seen it, there's a thread about just that, here: https://www.englishforum.ch/other-ge...ng-school.html

Sorry, I can't help with the waiting lists. Perhaps the secretary of each school could give an answer about that.

I can add one other Montessori school to check out, which is closer to Thalwil / Kilchberg: Montessori House of Kids in Adliswil. They only go up to age 6, but I know that quite a few of their graduates go on to one of the other Montessori schools for their primary schooling. They also have AMI-trained Montessori staff.

I hope your search for a new home and school go well!

Re: Where to live near Montessori schools and Enge

Hello!
We are moving to Zurich in June 2019. We are keen to join our 3 year old at one of the 3 montessoris.. dinsle, sprungbrett or rietberg.
Can group members please help with understanding of the wait list system; other options/ montessori schools in the vicinity and general review about the schools.
My office location will be near Maagplatz and we plan to rent a house closer to her school where ever she gets admitted.
Happy to give any other details required to answer my queries.

Thanks!

Re: Where to live near Montessori schools and Enge

Hi srd,

I am Zurich now (only two weeks) but I have already contacted with D'Insle and Rietberg.

We made a visit to Rietberg and we loved it. They told us that there is waiting list and all the places are taken for the next year (starting on August 2019) but there could be changes, but no time frame. So the only thing that we could do was to put her on the waiting list and wait for their call.

For D'Insle, they are also fully booked but they did not offer a visit for that reason and explained how the waiting list works although they did not gave me a time frame. If you want me to send you the email that I got from them, I can do it privately.

We will also visit Lipschule (Kilchberg) and House of Kids (Adliswil).

Another thing to take into account is that the schools won't put you in their waiting lists until you visit them. You can send them the application but the enrollment will be provisional.

Hope this helps a little. Good luck with the moving!

Don't know your budget, but have a look here. We are living there and it's right around the corner of these schools etc.
