Basel-Land Birsfelden or Basel AM Ring

Hi all & Happy new year!

We are in the process to relocate to Basel, Switzerland and I would like your advice on the areas we are currently considering. The work location will be in the Gundeldingen.

One is in the Basel-Land Birsfelden and the other in Basel AM Ring. I have seen few threads in the forum eluding that BL may be better regarding taxes, insurances & rent prices. As the last threads I saw are from 2016-17, is this still the case?

Does BL Birsfelden has lower taxes? and where I can compare area from area? (Same for insurances)

In addition to that, are there any negatives of living in BL? For example, will we still be able to use the Basel Migration Office or we can only use public services based on our location?

** As a last note, is it normal to ask for 2 months deposit?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Use Comparis to compare to taxes and the insurace.
https://www.comparis.ch/umzug-schwei...iz/basel-stadt

The deposit for the flat can be up to 3months rent.

BL and BS are like different countries. Best to assume no shared services. There are far more places within easy commute to... well anywhere in Basel, than Birsfelden, which isn't the nicest place.

I would recommend Arlesheim/Dornach or Münchenstein.
But don't expect something is going on after 8pm.
It is really quiet, people come together at sportsclubs or doing some work in their garden.

Why not look in Gundeli and walk to work?
Otherwise, Binningen.
The other places are also fine, but this is a good opportunity to remove your commute.

Re: Basel-Land Birsfelden or Basel AM Ring

I appreciate your prompt responses!!

Unfortunately we only have 1 week left to book something and those 2 flats/areas were the ones that are available and looked nice at the moment. We will look to see if there is anything in the Binningen area as well.

We are a young couple, no kids, first time in CH, no car at the moment.

I understand the matter is subjective, but why Birsfelden is not considered nice?

What about Basel AM Ring? The commute seems also good from there.

Any other things we would need to consider? (Based on below, seems safer to assume that for any services we would need to rely on our canton of residence)

Thank you again!

Only in comparison to other places. It's not like some sink estate in a London suburb. But it has a more "blue collar" population, and is less wealthy. We lived our first five years in CH in Pratteln, consider the 3rd worst place in Switzerland at the time, and it was fine.

BS/BL public transport infrastructure is regular, reliable, frequent and relatively inexpensive, so any community on the border with BS or even one community removed will be fine. You don't need a car. You will pay higher tax (and insurance premiums) in BS than BL. Younger people nonetheless do generally prefer BS.

Whatever you choose, it won't be a disaster!

Re: Basel-Land Birsfelden or Basel AM Ring

Nothing wrong with AM Ring and that would be preferential (in my opinion) over Birsfelden.
Birsfelden has the motorway on 2 sides and a main road on another, so you want to consider that.
AM Ring has a lot of public transport and main roads, so again consider location to these, specifically with regards to noise.

In any case, if you have to move again, it won’t break the bank.

Go live in the Am Ring area and get to know Basel. It's perfect for your situation. Worry about tax savings later...

I live in AM Ring and I love it...close to the city center and Rhine. I wouldn’t move to Basel Land since you are young and wanting to explore a new city. Basel-Land is lovely, but very quiet. Enjoy!!

Re: Basel-Land Birsfelden or Basel AM Ring

Am ring rather than Birsfelden in my opinion. Birsfelden is a bit of an outpost-
Gundeli is becoming very popular with young Swiss, including my son`s school teacher, but if you have children the schools are more challenging as they have more social problems.
