I can hear to 14,000Hz without headphones.
The actual problem is that lots of speakers and headphones can't reproduce signals above 10khz very well, so if you want to check your hearing you need to be sure that they do (I have sound meters that can test them).

Re: High frequency noise in apartment

I have a high frequency noise caused by the chimney of the heating system. Got used to it and it only screams during the coldest nights anyway.

Good morning,
Well, not so good, as I should be sleeping, but there is a HIGH FREQUENCY NOISE, which is driving me CRAZY!

I first noticed it, while taking measurements in the empty apartment BEFORE we moved in, but chalked it up to the emptiness and hard surfaces. However, we are approaching four months and it is still present.

Finally, I hired a professional sound technician to come, with highly specialized equipment and he found it to be the food center refrigerator. He said it emitted 5000 Herz. The landlords are kindly willing to purchase a new one, BUT I HAVE MY DOUBTS. Even if I switch off the circuit breaker, the noise does not go away.

No, I do not have tinnitus, though I am worried about the long term effects upon my hearing.

Any suggestions, before we exchange the refrigerator? Thanks for your help.
You could possibly have a family of rats or mice in the walls. They make a high pitched noise in the mating season so you seem to be particularly receptive

Re: High frequency noise in apartment

The lovely landlords delivered a new Food Center today and we only arrived home a few minutes ago... my ears have become so sensitive to high frequency, I am afraid to stop speaking and just listen....

What a strange experience...

Give me some time and I’ll report back.

Re: High frequency noise in apartment

I've googled but failed. What, in this context, is a Food Center?

Re: High frequency noise in apartment

In Nottingham, they used to put these "Teenagers Frequency" devices to keep teenagers out of certain areas... never worked on me, though...Could have been to do with the fact I've always been an old fart!
