Neighbourhoods in Geneva

I will be coming to Geneva and will require accommodation for my first three months. I have never been to Geneva however, a few of my friends have advised me to avoid staying in Paquis and Plainpalais. I have found a flat in Plainpalais which I would like to book (Rue de la Ferme). For further information, I am a female and will be coming by myself and would prefer to stay in a quiet and safe area. My question is whether or not Plainpalais is considered a safe area to stay in. Any thoughts or comments would be highly appreciated!
