Short-term housing, in Geneva-area France

Can anyone give advice on how to find a ~6-month accommodation in the French region around Geneva?

My wife and I are looking for a place for us and our baby. (She has an internship in Geneva, and we are seeking a French long-stay visitor visa for myself and our child.) It would be ideal to find a furnished apartment, but we can be flexible if we need to. We'd also prefer a 2-bedroom apartment (or 1 bedroom and a space suitable for an office, in addition to the living room), but we could get by with 1 bedroom.

Can anyone give advice on how to do this? We're looking at general apartment listings, but we're not sure this is the best route. (Do most apartments even offer 6-month leases?)

We've found one site for short-term housing (ums.ch) which includes the surrounding French region, through this Expatica article. Are there more sites like that we should be looking at?

Are there agencies we should be going through, good for this kind of short-term situation?

Thank you for your help!

Are you sure you will be able to get a French residency permit? The work place is Switzerland.

Ain and the Haute Savoir are very accommodating to frontaliers. Provided one have a Permis/Carte de legitimation in Geneva they can stay in France.

Have you tried Air BnB? Have you had a thought about what side of the lake you want to stay. Annemasse is quite different than Ferney Voltaire ...

Re: Short-term housing, in Geneva-area France

@roegner: I haven't been 100% sure yet, and have been separately seeking confirmation. I was considering posting in another forum here about that. (Her HR person seemed to say it's allowed, but I wasn't sure yet if they were saying "It's fine with the Swiss" versus "The French authorize the residency.")

@bowlie: Thank you so much for that comment! That's the case even for non-EU citizens?

Yes, we've considered AirBnB. It will be our last resort, but it is more difficult and riskier -- we'd be unlikely to find one for the whole time, so would need to move multiple times. Also AirBnB hosts sometimes cancel at the last minute.

No, we haven't been very particular about which side of the lake to live on -- we've been prioritizing finding any viable 6-month option that isn't crazily expensive. Now that you mention it, I see people saying that Annemasse is a depressing & ugly place to live. Is that what you meant?

Agency to help find 6mo-1yr rental?

I'm looking for housing for a 6-month (to one year) contract in the Geneva area, and need to live in nearby France. If necessary, I could do multiple shorter-term rentals, e.g. two 3-month rentals.

I've been looking at sites like ums.ch, clickandbed.com, etc, but I'm also wondering:

Are there agencies with real-estate agents who can help with this kind of search?

If you want to live in France, you should be looking at French Real Estate sites, not Swiss. It will be much easier if you really want to live in France, even easier if you have transport and can deal with the commute, the further out, the easier as well. That being said, there are many long term apt hotels in France that rent typically by the month. That could be something to look at if it suits, as well as air bnb possibly.

Simple answer, as an American you can't. If you work in Switzerland then you're going to have to live in Switzerland. As a non-EU you don't meet the criteria for a G (cross border) permit.

I seriously doubt you'd even get a Swiss residence permit from what you've said so far. There are quota limits for non-EU nationals and a Swiss employer has to prove they can't find a Swiss/EU national to do the job.

Unless you're highly specialised I can't see a permit being granted for such a short period.
