Moving used furniture from France to Switzerland

I live in France but will be leaving the country soon and wonít be taking the furniture with me, my dad lives in Basel and I was wondering if he takes the furniture to his house in Basel will he have to pay Swiss VAT?
He bought everything for me 2 years ago and I think the value now should be around 3000 eur or less.

Generally you do not have to pay Swiss VAT when entering Switzerland with used goods destined for personal use when moving here.

Hi, thank you for your answer.
Yes I know about that, but the thing is I am not moving to Switzerland, and my father already lives there, so I donít know if the same rule applies in this case or how can I make sure.

The stuff is still used/personal effects and belongings. Speak to Swiss customs to see what they say.

It doesn't, but you should only have to pay VAT on the current value, not purchase price.

The transport will cost more than the VAT.

That could all be true, however the period for Vat free import (if ever there was any for his dad) surely has expired by now.

And a bunch of used furniture can't hurt that much at the border, just try to talk the value down, border will make an estimate and if that would be 1500,- CHF the VAT is 115,50 if it is worth the drive it likely is worth that money.

Re: Moving used furniture from France to Switzerland

As already mentioned, the best thing to do is to ask Swiss customs in advance about these specific circumstances.
