Ceiling construction

So I saw a house and took a photo of the ceiling:

Only when I looked closer did I notice that the pieces of wood going across the beams were not continuous but seemed to be individual pieces. what's going on here? is this common? are the pieces of wood just decoration then?

that's what it seems like. i think there must be then a gap between the visible ceiling shown and then the 'real' structure above it which has the structure which supports the roof/tiles etc.

i need to go back with a ladder and an endoscope to confirm.

Yes, the bits between the beams are certainly/mainly for decoration. They may have a role in boxing in the space for insulation, but if there are visible gaps it's likely that there will be another layer to do this.

If you mean the beams themselves are not continuous, then it's entirely possible that it's a completely false ceiling. There's one room/floor in our chalet like that, which gives a stupidly low ceiling. Had an engineer look at it and it's clear that there's at least one more layer, looks like possibly the original ceiling, about 40cm higher up, and above that there may even be more, given there's a total 70cm between the ceiling and the next floor level. We don't understand why it would have been done, and at some point we'll rip it out.
