| | a product to kill bacteria when washing underwears in shared machine
Hi all,
it has been a while I haven't needed to use a shared washing machine, but currently I need to.
Not sure how to call this product in English, here is an example of a product https://www.sunstore.ch/de/sanytol-d...4aAky8EALw_wcB
I struggle to find similar products in Coop or Migros, today I asked an employee of Coop and they advised me to go to the only Coop city in town, also it would cost almost 19 CHF for 500 ml (in French supermarket it is less than 5 Euros)
So I have 2 questions:
1. if you need to use a shared washing machine in the building to wash your underwears, do you add this kind of products? why?
2. if you add it, where can we buy this with convenience (instead of going to the only Coop city in town) and if possible not this price as it can be another brand or the shop's own brand. I don't care for "Sanytol"
Thanks

I was going to take the piss, but then I saw that you live in Geneva and that, therefore, your concerns are entirely legitimate.
To be honest, if I lived anywhere west of Fribourg I'd rather incinerate my underwear than wear it after washing it in a communal machine.
Good luck with your search!

It would never have occurred to me to use a product like this.
What are you worried about?

We all know how filthy Geneva is.
I fully support the OP in their search for caustic substances.

On a more serious note: Wash underpants/socks with 60C, anything else with 40C and you'll be fine. Use just regular washing powder, no detergents or any other crap. If any particular neighboor behaves like a pig, contact the owner or company that keeps care of the house.

You can easily find disinfectant for baby clothes at the pharmacy.
Run a short cycle on empty with the disinfectant and then wash your clothes.
(Never ever wash underclothes and socks together).

I would go natural- its healthier, cheaper and safer. Add White vinegar and a few drops of tea tree oil. You can order tea tree cheaply from iherb if too expensive locally. Vinegar is scent-less after drying but is a disinfectant. Tea tea will have a scent but its not too strong. If you hate the smell use lavender oil. Both are effective disinfectants.

Thanks | | | | | Are you a man,a woman,or neutral (@neutralname )
Womens underwear cannot be washed so hot if they are synthetic.Wash by hand. Mens are usually cotton so no problem. I'm not to sure about the neutral stuff.
And considering alot of people have really bad toilet hygiene then your concern is fully justified.

Do two or more wash cycles. The first at 95 degrees centigrade for anything which tolerates this temperature (cotton towels etc.). That'll kill off most pathogens (fungus, bacteria, viruses etc.) that the previous user may have infected the machine with. Any subsequent wash should be safe.
By the way, I'd wash socks at 40 degrees centigrade otherwise the elastic fails and they tend to shrivel up to the size of a baby sock.

With bactericidal and fungicidal effect, destroys at any temperature microbes and bacteria that are not removed during normal washing.
No indication of what those might be. I'm sure normal washing is fine for most purposes. It's apparently very toxic to aquatic organisms. Anyway, 10:1 water/bleach is all you need to sanitise a washing machine. It's what (some?) hospitals use. You should also ensure that the machines get decalced on a regular basis.
The OP might be a germophobe.
