Question regarding cat damaging wallpaper and insurance

Hi all,

I don't know if this thread is more relevant here or in the Insurance forum. Anyhow...

My dear cat right after we brought her from Italy to Switzerland was a bit fussy due to the long trip and the new house. She scratched the wallpaper (IDK why the owner of the apartment decided to put wallpaper instead of just painting the walls) in our apartment in three distinct places while we were out.

We have solved this issue buying a scratching post and training our furry room mate to use it and this avoided further scratches on the wall.

We are not planning to leave the apartment soon, however I'm quite scared of what we might pay when we leave as replacing wallpaper is not just like painting a wall (and for sure not something I feel confident of doing myself with some tools from Jumbo).

Looking around the internet and on the forum I couldn't understand if my House/Civil Liability insurance can be activated for this kind of things (reading my policy, it states that covers damage done by domestic animals like cats and dogs but I don't understand if it covers this kind of things) or it's just a matter for the Deposit on the apartment. Furthermore do I need to activate the insurance now and fix the wallpaper now or should I wait when I'll leave the apartment in a few years? I also think that is pointless to fix the wallpaper now with the risk that it gets maybe "damaged" again in the future (I just got a baby boy) and then needs another fix.

If I say that the damage to the wallpaper was done by me (eg. while moving furniture) will make it easier to use the Insurance?

Hi Capitan Harlock,

Yep. Pretty much all Swiss personal liability insurance policies cover damages to third-party property inflicted by your pets.

Re: Question regarding cat damaging wallpaper and insurance

What you pay, depends on the age of the wallpaper when you move out.

All these things have a certain lifespan, and it iwas something with a life span of say 10 years and you moved out after it had been in place 11 years, you should pay nothing.

Get 3rd party liabiltiy insurance and they cover it
