Places with good rail connection to Basel - Rheinfelden?

Hi all

My family (wife and baby daughter) and I will be looking to move out of temporary accommodation in Basel and into a rented flat. My wife is a stay at home mum and will be for the next few years.

We are looking for somewhere that offers value for money but is within Switzerland (Iím British and the prospect of being a frontelier is too legally risky for me). We are considering both rental prices, health insurance, taxes and commute costs). I donít drive, so will be commuting by train.

Having done a fair bit of research, it seems that Rheinfelden in Aargau offers much of what we are looking for, as health insurance and taxes are lower than in Basel stadt or Basel land. Property also seems comparatively cheap. From what I can work out commute costs would be low as my ticket would be covered by the NW Switzerland pass.

What do fellow Baselites think about this plan? Do you have any other suggestions (particularly within Aargau) ?

Thanks ever so much!

Money is not the only thing to consider, time of commute and time away from your family has to come into the equation too.

Value for money....compared to your UK salary or Swiss salary ?

Thatís a good point - I should have mentioned that Iíd like a commute of no more than hour.

We arenít really big city folk, so moving out to a smaller town makes sense for non financial reasons.

Where is your workplace in Basel ?
Or will you work around the sbb station ?

Do you mind to change more then once to reach your workplace ?

Commuting Rheinfelden to Basel isn't difficult. I've know people who did it for years. Of course workplaces can change - I went from a ten minute tram ride to 50 minute bus-tram-train-bus...

The S1 runs every 30 mins, so anywhere along the line will work, although it's redneck country out there.
I've a friend in Kaiseraugst, he's happy with it, and also commented about less tax and cheaper apatment than BS.
