Glarus canton - where to live

Hi,
my husband and I have to move to Switzerland within six months. We have a half-year-old child, we are from the EU, Christians and we know English. After moving, we all plan to learn the local language. My husband found a job in the Glarus canton so this canton is ok for us due to his work place.

Can you please give me some advice or help in choosing the city where to look for accommodation?

We are looking for at least 3 bedroom apartment up to 1500 CHF. I would like to have my own washing machine in the apartment (the ads are mostly shared laundry). Ideal apartment building with elevator (this is only in newer apartments?). In the city should be able to visit the English-speaking pediatrician, post office, kindergarten, school, shops, some park with a playground. It could be a city that accepts strangers trying to fit in

If someone would take the time to recommend or not recommend specific cities in the canton of Glarus, I will be very grateful

Re: Glarus canton - where to live

Hi, I live at the end of the valley in Linthal with 2 kids. Where exactly is the job? In Glarus itself? Lots of nice villages. Glarus has an English speaking ped, most villages have a general practioner that will see kids too. Playgrounds are everywhere.
Depends really what is important to you. We went for the end of the valley as it was close to hiking / skiing in Braunwald and had all the schooling and was quieter.
Hatzingen / Luchsingen is also good, Schwanden is a bit bigger again and has a toddler group and closer to Glarus. Glarus / Ennenda itself. Or you could look at the other side towards Netstal etc ... has bigger shops and closer to the motorway for access to Chur and Zurich etc...
Good luck in the move!

Can you give any information on sun/shade? I understand that in Glarus it is easy to end up virtually permanently in the shade if one lives in the wrong place!

Re: Glarus canton - where to live

There is another thread on EF called ‘Glarus süd’ which discusses the shade and sun. I think it really depends on your house. I am on the left side as you drive into Linthal and don’t have an issue. Maybe others can comment more on this? I really don’t have an issue here though.... my tomatoes do well in the summer

Re: Glarus canton - where to live

What town is your husband's job in? Might make a lot of sense to live there - walk to work, come home for lunch etc.

Do you foresee driving by car, taking public transport or some combination? The towns in the main valley, from Ziegelbrücke to Schwanden, have trains every half hour. Nidfurn to Linthal only once an hour; the Sernf valley (Elm, Matt, Engi) has a once-hourly bus to Schwanden then you can catch the train from there.

The budget you mention is about right for an older apartment in, say, Schwanden - although you might well have to compromise on the laundry situation or lift. (On a related note, is central heating a must-have for you? It's not a given here, read the ads carefully and if it isn't mentioned, ask!)

In general, the further back the valley you go, the more you get for your money. Not all villages have their own post office or shops though, let alone an English-speaking pediatrician. Google Maps will be your friend here, or list some villages you're thinking of and I can maybe offer some info.

Hmm, what else? Oh I know. There's a common weather pattern from about November to March which leaves Bilten under a thick fog while the rest of the canton is in sunshine. Prices in Bilten are accordingly lower than neighboring Niederurnen (although both still probably above your stated budget of 1500 for 5 rooms - unless there's something else wrong with the place.)

You can use this map. https://map.geo.admin.ch/?lang=de&to...7962.12&zoom=8
It shows the suitability of roofs for solar installation.

If all is blue (like in Gondo VS) you know you it will be rather dark. If all is dark red it is a super sunny spot.

You might also compare Tierfehd vs. Linthal. And I have the impression you can see the mentioned difference between Bilten and Niederurnen.
