Apartment temperatures - A/C installation

I've got this kind of a first world problem I wanted to discuss. It seems like most of the newer buildings in Switzerland comes with these super nicely-looking floor to ceiling windows, Minergie certifications, etc. In my experience it works totally perfectly during the winter/spring/autumn, but both of the apartments we've lived in so far are just hell in the summer. Last year temperature in ours didn't go lower than 26C even during the night and having mechanical ventilation and a fan in every room didn't help at all.

As warmer days are apparently supposed to come even sooner this year, I wanted to ask if anyone of you found the solution to this issue. We can't use window mounted A/C units as our windows don't slide - we can only open them wide which doesn't help when it's over 30C outside. Does anyone have any experience with going through the landlord or the real estate agency to have A/C professionally installed? If so, what was the average cost? Or do you just cope with these issues with a swimming pool on your loggia or balcony?

Re: Apartment temperatures - A/C installation

I bought a mobile airco and made a plank which holds the hose and closes of the rest of the window. Only using it on the really hot days being consistent with opening in the night/morning and closing when it gets warmer outside than inside with blocking the sun from getting on the windows saves a lot of heat already.

Mechanical ventilation is not a cooling device, and if you suck air of of your home during daytime it will be replaced by warm air from outside, ventilators are worthless imho, they only make the air move and give the impression of it being cooler while the moment you turn if of or you walk out of the beam you start sweating like Ted Bundy on the electrical chair.

That's exactly my problem. As for the mobile aircon units with pipes - I had it in my mind as well, but these make much more sense with sliding windows - the gap is smaller and easier to isolate then. Also, ekhm, providing the real estate prices around here (not complaining, but...) it would be kinda nice to find a more elegant solution than that.

Re: Apartment temperatures - A/C installation

We always kept everything shut including shutters for the whole day and only opened at night.

The really really warm nights are maybe a couple of weeks if lucky, not sure worth having AC for those is worth it?

Very interesting topic. When i was renting an apartment in Geneva (the temperature was hell in the summer), the rental agency told me it was forbidden to install an A/C. I would also be interested to know how owners handle this, as I own a property now and would like to install A/C.

Yeah, us too, but living in a bunker is not the best way to enjoy the beautiful Swiss summer. :P

If you're not allowed to install a steady AC and don't want a mobile AC, than your only other option is to bring cold into the house by buying Icecream at the supermarket

I could also just get a tent and camp in our neighbour's garden.

Having a pregnant woman in the house, or a small kid who'll sleep shit in 30 degrees makes those couple of hundreds for a mobile airco almost the best investment in your life.

Re: Apartment temperatures - A/C installation

Sadly it is forbidden to install - I have seen these, but not so sure they work properly.

https://www.mediamarkt.ch/de/product...5-1405577.html

We use the window/hose kind, there are special nets you can use to trap the big open spaces...but still, not the most efficient in large rooms.

Hopefully some better solutions will be made...if this winter has any reflection for the future summer heat, we are in for a nasty one!

Re: Apartment temperatures - A/C installation

Modern buildings with underfloor heat-pump system should be reversible for the summer and cool the floors and thus the whole apartment...

This is exactly what happens when you use a monoblock a/c unit with the hose out of the window.

We tried playing with the settings, but couldn't really feel any difference. How would you then set up the standard room temperature regulators? Would it be high as in "high cooling / reversed power" or low as in "low temperature"?

Not if you use a dual hose system.

"Modern buildings with underfloor heat-pump system should be reversible for the summer and cool the floors and thus the whole apartment..."

Our building has only been up for 2 years and has geothermal underfloor heating and an air cooling / circulation system (the control panel has 3 settings). It's great in summer because the apartment is cool, only thing is when it's on the highest setting it sounds like being on Easyjet, but you get used to it.

At our last place we couldn't sleep with the bedroom windows open because of the noise from assorted drug dealers on the main street arguing and fighting during the night (we were close to the red light zone). We bought one of the aircon units with the hose out of the window which we used to leave on for a few hours before going to bed. It was effective, but it hasn't been used since we moved.

Honestly... it is worth it... and to be honest, I wish we could install it on "free will".

I own, and, I've asked around. It "might" be possible to install if I get the entire building to approve during the building owners meeting annually, and, then I sent this approval to the Kanton authorities that deal with this, then they said they approve it too if I follow some regulations that they sent me... (major bureaucracy paperwork to fill out.. etc.. but seems doable) In the end, this "pet project" seemed like was going to be in the 20K range between equipment, installation and fulfilling the bureaucracy from the Kanton. The only thing that was not clear to me is if the building has to have "all in favor" or "majority in favor"... in my building I don't think I would get all, maybe majority. But in the end, I gave up as I had other battles to fight.

...The good news (at least I hope so) is that I think I found a compromise solution for using the portable unit. I also have the windows that open to the side, or from up/down, thus, I have been using this "skirts" to cover the opening and putting the whose thru a hole.. but, I honestly don't think this works well and I can always feel the heat coming in..

I found a carpenter company that does a "fake window" with the hole, and I have ordered one. Should arrive in 6 weeks or so, and, I am hoping this will do a better job than the "skirt" to keep everything a bit better. Look at the attachment to illustrate

But I agree... I wish I could have a real "split" installed
