I hate the smell of weed, and one of the reasons I wanted a house was to avoid having the chance of weed/cigaratte smokers below my balcony.

In fact, when the daughter of the family next door smokes weed in the garden, the smell seeps into our house (row/terrace house) and I really hate it. I tolerate it by closing the windows, but in summer it sometimes really bothers me. It is surprising how much it comes into our house to be honest.

I have read that weed on the whole is a lot stronger in potency than when I was a teenager, doesn't help. I sympathise totally with the OP. One of those tricky situations.
Yes, I have the same problem as OP and you but it's only from time to time.

My neighbours are occasional (more than usual in the last weeks unfortunately) weed smokers. Considering they're putting up with my kids' occasional screaming and drama.....I think we're good.

I asked the neighbour to be considerate. His response, more or less, was f.u., you can't do sh*t, marijuana is legal. This took me back, since I was asking him to be considerate, since we can't leave our apartment during the covid lockdown. We now feel like prisoners.
I don't want to imply anything but...it's the tone that makes the music. I don't know you and don't know how you asked him, but telling him to be considerate might have triggered some reactions.... Perhaps you should have said you have some health issues/allergies. Even the least sympathetic are more understanding when you mention a solid reason.

Take care.

Not for me. Iíd take weed smell over tobacco any day. But in general, the Swiss are the absolute worst when it comes to respecting others aversion to cigarettes. Now that there are rules at the train stations, they usually respect them there...but otherwise, they will stand within an inch of you at a bus stop and blow it directly into your face.
I dislike both smells. I wouldn't even try to enter a discussion about which is worse. I don't have a problem with people doing their own thing in their own time in their own home, or even smoking in my presence if they do so respectfully. But if the smell is annoying others, and they don't see what's wrong with that, they've crossed a line.

Re: Neighbour's marijuana smoke sipping into our apartment

We also have someone smoking in the building next to ours. Once she starts smoking the living room stinks within a minute, I have to close the window immediately... And regardless of how fast you close the window it takes much longer to get rid of the smell (and of the poison even if not in a big concentration). So I do understand how annoying and disturbing the situation can be...

Food smells can be just as obtrusive especially when its pungent smells that really get into your throat. So why not report the neighbour for that also?

YEs. Property managers and the government should pull their finger out and put on a general ban on smoking in apartments. Why should people have to put up with these egotist smokers

We have a restaurant just down the street and in the Summer, they have outdoor seating. If we leave the windows open, our entire home smells like a bar. I detest it and find it very inconsiderate that the guests think it is fine to smoke like chimneys in a crowded residential area & the restaurant allows it. But what can I do other than move? I wish I had known they would have outdoor seating, but I looked at the place during the wintertime. The restaurant is a local institution and there is no way I will be able to do anything about it. I have asthma and it sucks.

My husband and I are avid home chefs and I’m sure our neighbors are annoyed by all the grilling and Mexican spices coming from our home, but we have every right to do so. We follow the rules and respect our neighbors as much as possible.

OP, in my opinion you have two choices. 1) Move or 2) Come to a certain middle ground arrangement with your neighbor. Perhaps he only smokes outside 1x per day etc.. Going full nuclear with the police and landlord won’t do you any favors there as I doubt they will do anything about it unless there are specific house rules on smoking.

I love this country but why oh why do they smoke so much? Enjoy the fresh beautiful air man!

You cannot negotiate with smokers. As I said, they are egotists. People seem to forget that smokers are drug addicts

Yep, people smoke like chimneys in outdoor cafes. Nothing more annoying when you pick a table well away from anyone else and just as your meal arrives a group has to come and sit at the closest table to us (when there are plenty of others free) and immediately light up. Even worse when the wind blows it straight in your face. Nasty disgusting habit and cigarette manufacturers should no longer be allowed to make their poison. Ban smoking completely

It amazes me how many under 20's smoke. My friend has 2 teenagers (16 and 18) and not only do they smoke but so do most of their friends. I asked them once if they had been given any education at school about the harm smoking does and did they know it can cause respiratory problems, cancer, premature death etc. They just laughed and said they knew!

And perhaps the neighbour is just an objectionable pri@k! As neither of us know either of these people it is a complete guess. I hate the smell and would also object to being unable to enjoy my balcony because of selfishness of others. If he wants to smoke why not do it inside with his windows shut. I don't know whether OP has a pet (or young child) but marijuana smoke is also extremely toxic and even fatal to pets.
Its the eating of it that is likely to be toxic to animals not passive smoking.

If you do suspect your pet has ingested cannabis—showing symptoms such as dizziness or wobbling, unusual lethargy, loss of appetite or incontinence, agitation, vomiting, increased or decreased heart rate, or lowered body temperature—keep it warm and offer, but don't force, water to keep it hydrated.

Nah! Thatís the time to do it, when you need to do dumb rebellious things to stake out a bit of independence In fact, up to 30 or so, I tend to make allowances.

Itís the over-30s still smoking who puzzle me. By that age thereís no excuse.

This. I can imagine a Swiss being told off by someone "Be considerate! You crossed a line!"...

I don't know, it seems really difficult for some people here to understand that whatever worked "back home" needs reassessment and adjustment.

By that age, you're well and truly hooked and it's really hard to quit. I've never smoked, but my friends that have struggled mightily and relapsed numerous times. It's not just an addiction, but a habit. You have to deal with both at the same time in order to successfully quit. This seems true for "regular" smokers as well as those who use cannabis.

Some people don't understand what the aspiration hob is there for. Some people somehow manage to burn everything they cook. Maybe cooking lessons should be obligatory in schools?

They were mandatory for girls back in the dark ages when I went to school. Boys had to take shop (woodworking).

Incorrect there are numerous credible studies that show that passive marijuana smoke is toxic for pets. (Google it) I wouldn't advise it around babies and kids either. Smokers on the whole are innately selfish bunch, so belligerent about their rights that they refuse to consider that people also have the right not to be poisoned
