Finances possible for relocation to Graubunden

We have £800,000 for a small place, maybe within walking distance to the train
And roughly speaking £40- 45,000 a year between us for everything else

We have always wanted to move to the area
I just wanted to hear thoughts on this

Re: Finances possible for relocation to Graubunden

Hello, and welcome to the Forum.

http://www.budgetberatung.ch/
In the left-hand column, scroll down to "Budget für" and select the applicable number of people in your family. There, you will see standard examples of budgets, for a liveable but not luxurious standard.

In case you haven't already discovered it, www.ch.ch is a Swiss government umbrella website, with info on many things. Some is translated into English, some not, so it's always worth looking in the local Swiss language, too.

In this forum, each sub-forum contains so-called "Stickies" with the main answers to recurring questions here.

For anything you're looking up, apart from google translate, there's also deepl, and using them both can give slightly different translations, which can help to get the overall picture better.

Welcome, and good luck as you turn this project over in your mind.

Re: Finances possible for relocation to Graubunden

What a coincidence, I was just reading about moving to Graubunden while working remotely for employers/clients in the dark flatlands https://stories.swissinfo.ch/how-the...ntent=o#214150

I think I could do 3 months up there and the rest of the year in the office with the colleagues.

Are you thinking of just strolling in and buying a holiday house while you remain working in the UK? Or moving to Graubünden with no job lined up? Or getting a job in the area, then finding a house? Or do you live and work in a little-known Dorf called Torbay in Switzerland already, with the appropriate permit, but you still have all your money in GBP and still get paid in GBP?

Know no one? Don’t speak the language? As a tourist great. To live permanently you‘d hate it. Stick with Torbay...

Someone has a dream and is exploring if it's possible to realize the dream.
Nothing wrong with that and you need to start somewhere.

If you are British and only British, you only have until the end of the Brexit transition period to be able to do that under current (fairly easy) rules. After that, Brits are third-country nationals and even with a fair degree of goodwill certainly on the Swiss side, your trust fund will need to be pretty substantial to be able to retire here I would think.

In terms of your budget, it very much depends on where exactly you want to be. Ski resorts are going to be very expensive - £800k/ ca. CHF 1m won't get you a house but should get you a decent flat. Outside a ski resort, you could be looking at a decent 5-room chalet for that. But transport is then the question - you say close to a train station, but where are you aiming to get to from that train station? SBB (the national rail system) terminates at Chur and everywhere beyond that is on the Rhätische Bahn. And don't underestimate how remote the Engadine can be. But somewhere in the Surselva will be much more accessible (whilst still feeling remote)
