Cooperative housing: how much work?

I am new in Zurich, Switzerland. In my country (Argentina) we do not have cooperative housing so I have never heard of this before. Now I am considering to apply to one of these cooperative housings in Zurich for a long term stay. I have read that all members have to collaborate in some way.

- How much time does one have to invert on these collaborations?

- What type of collaborations are they expecting?

If anyone here is living in a cooperative housing and wants to share the experience, it would be nice.

Re: Cooperative housing: how much work?

Its really difficult to get in a cooperative housing program in switzerland since its really attractive. There are different models, for different companies.
You can try with the "stadtwohnungen" on the zürich city webpage, where u submit your data and every wednesday they publish new flats that are now avalable.

There are other systems with waiting list or just listings at homegate or similar. Normally if they are listed expect lots of people, like in the hundreds.

Also they expect you to engage in the community and to pay a initial "fee" (will be payed back when you leave). This will vary from corporation to corporation but can be till 20k CHF.

Hope i could help

Re: Cooperative housing: how much work?

I have lived in several cooperative apartments and I didn’t find it especially difficult to get in. On one I had to come for an interview but they did t ask any tricky questions. I never payed more than 8K to join. One of the up sides is that they have an annual meeting where you get to elect the officials and approve their budget and policy. Those discussions are open and frank and if you suggest something it will be taken seriously .

Thanks for your answer. In the application form they ask things like "what would you want to do (after joining)?". What are they expecting me to do? Sorry if this is a silly question, but I really do not know the details of this type of cooperative housing.

Members don't have to collaborate. Completely up to you. Very difficult here in Zürich to get a place as a single. As a couple easier especially if you have children

Heres one such in Zürich. Only in German. The prices are very much less than what private landlords want

Actually it is not that different, other than u got to pay an amount up front before entering. Other than that it will be very nice if u get an apartment like that because the rent is significantly lower. U dont have to invest in any other collaboration if u dont want to.

We line in one. Its pretty cool.

You pay a (refundable) deposit. It is more like, you purchase a share of the co operative society. With it you get voting rights. Many things are decided by voting.

I think some of the apartments are subsidized.

It is not a must to participate, but you get a fair chance to make your point, engage with neighbors. There are many initiatives by resident - to share, supp

Of all the places we lived, this is by far the best experience.

These apartments are in great demand, you can join the waiting list.

I guess they want to see some long term committal, so you're not going to move out again 12 months later. Maybe tell them that you know about the concept from your own country and are enthusiastic about supporting it.

Also, some community commital makes a good impression. So study their website and find out the sort of stuff they do community-wise, and if any of that appeals to you, and you can see yourself joining in, let them know.
