We tend to eat very late. Ordinarily that is, I suppose, our 'problem'. But now in summer we are barbecuing frequently on the weekends and am wondering if the smells wafting into our neighbors' house upstairs is something we should be avoiding.
By late, I mean 2.30 PM ( lunch ) and 9.30 PM ( dinner).

Such a rotten nasty disgusting habit and about time these cancer causing sticks were completely banned.
Haha, yeah, but I don't know if that's achievable. I don't even want that, I wish people were at least more considerate...

I guess only buying a family house could solve this sort of problems, however - I suppose we'd have to compromise on a lot of things (location, quality of schools, distance to work, recreational facilities etc) plus I'd probably have to deal with Geraniumpolizei.

Re: Are we being bad neighbors?

OP,if you realize yourself that your habit may be a bit annoying to your neighbours yet you have nice of neighbours who didn't complain so far, keep those late night grillings to the week-end (some of the winter food is quite nice even in summer ). The afternoon grilling I'm sure nobody minds.

And if they're so nice, why not invite them one night? Then it's also easy to drop a "is that actually disturbing to others?" in between dinner and desert.

Re: Are we being bad neighbors?

I laughed at the 10pm bedtime thing mentioned here. About 5 years ago we were asked to house sit for someone in the suburbs as they were going away for 5 weeks and there had been a few recent burglaries in the area. It was a detached house and we used to sit in the garden in the evenings. At 9.50pm every night all of the electric shutters in the surrounding area would come down and everyone's lights went out.. We found it a bit weird, coming from Scotland we're used to sitting out in summer until 11pm as it's still daylight.

Shutters come down prior to 10PM so that noise does not disturb the neighbors, it does NOT mean that they go to sleep, rather they have their sex parties!

Hi folks,
Thanks for all the advice. As doropfiz presumes correctly, we are from a wildly different culture.
The only reason I chose to ask this question here rather than to our neighbors is that we get along very well with them and did not want them to say "no problem" because they felt obliged to do so.
I wanted to understand whether what we were doing could be considered un-neighborly and desist if it were so.
And just to clarify, we make absolutely no noise when barbecuing so that is not a factor.
Thank you for drip-feeding the relevant info.

It's the same for smoke imho. We have new neighbours who have what I assume it's their last cigarette before bed and it's not at all pleasant. It's getting very hot and it's impossible to sleep with closed windows (which we usually never do anyways, there must be some source of fresh air in our house)
If you can point a fan facing out of your open window, that might help keep their smoke from coming in. We use to have to do that in our old apartment due to the chain-smoker who lived downstairs, and it really did help.

Thank you, your tip might be really useful this summer...and I'm also gonna talk with them personally in whatever language they wish (at least one of them is Swiss-Swiss and I count on communicating well with this one as per previous experiences) they might consider smoking on the other balcony. I really like this place and would hate to move just because of that. (not that I have to justify myself here, but the youngest one had some respiratory issues and we try to avoid triggers)

Re: Are we being bad neighbors?

Swiss people can be strange. We have a rooftop terrace, but it is on the 1st floor and our neighbors are all above us. We came home from a hike on Thursday evening and put a few sausages on the bbq and our sweet old neighbor stuck his head out and told us how good it all looked and then said “Do you know it’s already 9 PM?” “Have a nice evening and Guete”. We took it as a discussion about how light it was still outside, & didn’t even think it was because he was annoyed about the time we were cooking until minutes later. He is the one who rather obnoxiously closes his windows loudly when we grill, even at more normal hours.

Our contract states we are allowed to grill & we even moved it as far away from the windows as possible. Can’t please everyone and if you were concerned about noises and smells, perhaps you shouldn’t move to the crowded city center.

Well, I might have been Swiss in a previous life because whatever annoyed the heck out of me back home it annoys the heck out of me here too..
The only difference is we don't react there. I'm happy I live here tbh.

As an adult, eating when babies and young children eat is fine - if that's what you want to do.

Expecting other adults to do the same because they live near you? Really?

Hehe same. But what I was referring to was the rather passive aggressive way he addressed it, rather than telling us it was too late to grill, he informed us in a rather odd way...which is very Swiss.

I don't think this is a Swiss thing but a respect thing. The smells and noise scenerio goes both ways.

Nobody is expecting anyone to do anything except shown some courtesy and consideration when starting to cook outside at 9pm when the smells/smoke were obviously wafting straight into the apartment of the old (elderly?) neighbour. Still possible to eat at any time day or night without needing to cook outside
