Is this a serious question? Your current employer is obliged by law to keep your office desk clear, your seat warm and pencils sharpened for 3 months....

Re: Tenancy expiring but haven't found a new home

Mocking aside, it's clear OP isn't the first to run into this situation.

As others have said, it's really not a great idea to give up your current home (or job) before having something else lined up. Taking action in anticipation without confirmation is a recipe for disaster. Learn from this lesson.

Some options have been mentioned, and here's the order I'd try:
  1. Stop being picky about the new flat. You're the one who backed yourself into a corner with this strategy, so your best bet is to find a flat now and get moved.
  2. Ask your landlord for an extension, but I doubt this will work. Or if it does, they might ask you to cover the expenses of advertising the flat for no reason.
  3. Place your stuff in storage and move into a hotel, serviced apartment, or AirBnB until you find something new.

NOTE - Even if you find a new flat sooner, you may end up paying overlapping rent and/or storage for a short time. Some people manage to move out, clean house, handover, and move into the new place on the same day. Most don't, thus the need for an overlap.

Good luck!

Re: Tenancy expiring but haven't found a new home

One way to increase your chances of finding an apartment is to look for limited duration rentals. In German, these are called "befristet". Some of these are sub-lets by individuals who want to go travelling, others are by owners who already know that they will be emptying the building to do major renovations, or tearing it down completely.

Some of the sub-lets are furnished, others are not. You could probably take your furniture into a sub-let, and live fairly cramped if the person subletting has left his/her furniture in the flat. With a company as landlord, the flat is likely to be rented out unfurnished.

Here is a website that specialises in furnished sub-lets. https://www.ums.ch/welcome/

You are unlikely to be permitted to take your furniture into an AirBnB or into a serviced apartment hotel.

There are official storage companies, but you might be able to rent a single lock-up garage to store your furniture, as long as it is dry.

https://guenstigerlagerraum.ch/zueri...erraum-privat/
This one says that new customers who rent for at least 2 months will pay only CHF 1 for the first month.

https://w-lagerbox.ch/en/home/

https://mybox.ch/en/zurich/

To increase your chances of finding something that you can actually stay in, longterm, it can be worth having a family conference, to rank the factors you each consider important, and then trying to compromise on the lower few points.

Tell everyone, really everyone that you know that you are looking for an apartment.

Good luck with your search!

That also brings to mind the idea of a hobby room or storage room in an apartment building, although I don't know what kind of cost it would be or whether OP would have to sign for an extended time. Might be worth checking the usual housing sites?

Re: Tenancy expiring but haven't found a new home

The OP is surely not the first person to give notice before finding a new place. It's not the ideal situation but others have done this. For many tenants, if they don't give notice to the end of September, it could be according to the terms of their lease the next date to give notice to is the end of the following March.

If one's place is too small (we don't know the circumstances- could be family has grown, home office, etc) then another 6 months could really be a struggle.

To the OP, as you have been here 6 years, you must know competition for apartments in certain areas is fierce. What is your budget? Where are you looking? The bottom line is if you want to find a new place you are going to have to be more flexible and perhaps compromise on location. The alternative is finding a temporary solution and storage for your furniture, which is really less than ideal.

The notice has been given, there is still time to find a new place, so just be positive and open minded in your search. Good luck !

Re: Tenancy expiring but haven't found a new home

Thanks a lot everyone for your inputs!

The fact of the matter is that we had found an apartment initially and had served notice on that basis. However, we were later told the apartment we'd found wouldn't be available until the end of the year due to some maintenance work it apparently needed. Since a contract wasn't yet signed, there wasn't a solution via the new agency. Though we requested our current landlord to void the notice we'd served, he wasn't open to it. So, here we are.

Based on all the insight we've received from all your inputs (and sarcasm), we've agreed to be less picky and just solve the problem at hand. In the worst case where we haven't found one even then, we anticipate moving into a service apartment or AirBnB with our household items going into storage.

Will that apartment you found still be available to you at the end of the year? Or don't you have that one, either? And do you even still want it.... as in... is it what you'd like to have?

Exactly. Why not keep the apartment you want and do Airbnb or something for 4 months.

Re: Tenancy expiring but haven't found a new home

It might be, of course, that the new landlord has also moved on and now won't give them the contract. That's why I asked.

Yes, that would've been great. Unfortunately, that apartment is not available anymore.
