Tenancy expiring but haven't found a new home

Hi,

We are looking to move into a bigger apartment and have served notice to our current landlord, the handover being at the end of September.

We've been visiting many apartments but are yet to find one that we like.

Preparing for the worst case where we haven't yet found one by the end of September, what is the norm in Switzerland around such a situation?

Is it typically an option to extend the current tenancy for a few months, or even another term (assuming the landlord may want a min. contract term)?

Are there other options we can consider?

Many thanks in advance for your responses and creative suggestions.

Regards,
Pance

You move into an hotel/serviced apartment until you find somewhere. You could try asking the landlord for an extension, but you gave notice and they don't have to let you stay past your move out date.

Ok, but then what will happen to my furnitures and other household things? Where can I store them until I find a new house?

Is this a serious question? Your current landlord is obliged by law to store your belongings for a maximum of three months in a safe and air-conditioned place and to deliver them to your new place.

The norm in Switzerland is actually to first find a new place, then give notice and find a new tenant in case the notice periods don't match.

Start liking more apartments.
Use AirBNB in between.

Store your stuff in a storage unit, leaving it in the apartment will be really really expensive. (And why the *** would you do that)?

Re: Tenancy expiring but haven't found a new home

I do think that the “notice situation” in Switzerland ie, only at certain times of the year & 3 months before, makes it really hard to find a new place and move. Coming from the UK where it’s 1 month notice any time of year, it baffles me!

When we bought a place, we had to buy when we found the right apartment. We didn’t know when this would be so we couldn’t give notice. We ended up buying, 6 months before we could legally leave our rental. Worst case we planned to rent out our new place for 6 months, but fortunately our landlady found new tenants for us and we could move out.

But generally, I don’t know how people manage to tie up old place and new place time wise!

Moving companies can store them for you, for a price.

take one that you don't like. then spend time finding an apartment that you do like BEFORE giving notice on the next apartment.

honestly. what were you thinking when you gave notice before having an apartment secured?

Google for "zurich furniture storage", you'll get a map. There's a few companies with multiple locations each.

Re: Tenancy expiring but haven't found a new home

I have a similar problem: I have started to look for a new job that is better paid than my current one but less hours. In cheerful anticipation of this, I have already terminated my current employment contract. Now, the new job is not quite yet secured and I now wonder whether there is an option how I still can get paid until I have the new job.

Thanks for your help!

you find new tenants to take over your old contract. I think you have to propose a good candidate and then it's the landlords' problem if they don't like them.

Is this a serious question? Your current employer is obliged by law to keep your office desk clear, your seat warm and pencils sharpened for 3 months....
