Horgen or Dietlikon?

Hi All,

We have to move to a bigger apartment because my wife is pregnant, so the familiy will be bigger soon..
We applied for many apartments, today we got two of them. The first one is in Horgen the second one in Dietlikon.

Everything is the same (prices, the quality of the apartments, distance from the office) only the locations are different. What do yo think, which one would be the better option?

Horgen, close to the lake and 20min closer to ski fields in winter.

Difficult to say. Is one place easier to travel to work?

Friend of mine lived in Dietlikon and was happy, sleepy little city but some bigger shops nearby and good connection to HB.

Travel to work...this does not make it easier The office is near the Zürich HB, both of them is around 35-40 mins.

For convenience (big shops, restaurants, accessibility to the city and airport) then Dietlikon is better. However, there is a lot of traffic and it is quite an ugly area.

For quality of life and a far more peaceful environment close to the lake with a more scenic view and with easier access to the mountains then Horgen is better.

Go walk around each one and see what you think.

If you want to visit Ikea every day and love to spot planes, then Dietlikon, else Horgen.

Horgen is the better quality of life. You don’t need to go to the shops and airport every day. The airport is easily accessible from Horgen with the S2.

Re: Horgen or Dietlikon?

Horgen, no shadow of a doubt, after having lived there for 20 years.

Now living in AG, and regretting not having access to the lake.

If you want to save on taxes... (in case you have a C permit), horgen is much cheaper.

I was gonna mention that: Check the taxes, if everything else feels the same.

My choice would be Horgen, specially if I had kids to bring up. Dietlikon is very industrial, unless you actually found a green, quiet residential area? They gotta have some? Somewhere? I've never seen any though .....
And even if, the school might be on the other side of all the industry/traffic.

But this decision is so personal, guess you'll have to go with the hunch if everything else seems equal to you.

Re: Horgen or Dietlikon?

I think the traffic around Dietlikon would drive me nuts, if I lived there. There are so many stores there that it attracts a lot of traffic, and especially on Saturdays. Also, that means extra noise and pollution, I guess. I won't even drive into Dietlikon on a Saturday anymore because of the traffic.

LOL. I never ever have.

The few times I must go to Ikea (every two years maybe? Not even. Week-day but definitely not Wednesdays), I'm there at 9.55h - by the time I get to the passage within Ikea where you can see the cars coming and going, the queue at the garage entrance is already scary and I'm glad I'm near the check-out and can flee (in the other direction) soon.

Yep. Horgen. Definitely Horgen.

Re: Horgen or Dietlikon?

I get feeling some people mix up Dietlikon with Dietikon...

I would probably also say Horgen but...
Dietlikon is much bigger than the shop / industrial zone that people know. There are many residential areas there -it's not just shops.
But, Dietlikon (in comparison to Horgen) has downsides:
-> There is a plane noise
-> There is no lake.

On the plus side, it's much closer to ZH HB than Horgen. Train from Dietlikon -> HB is ~10 minutes.

Re: Horgen or Dietlikon?

Dietlikon:
More sun, flat, "less" population (7.8k), squished in between Walliselen, Brütisellen, which makes it perceived larger than it is.
Hard forest for leisure activity. Big sports ground with ice rink nearby in Walliselen. 50m indoor pools at Wallisellen and Oerlikon. Higher tax (92%), trend downward. A bit older population. More restaurants per population, no hotels. For its size and population much more traffic (40k movements).

Horgen:
Less sun, Sniffle coast, hilly, Horgen is big, it goes all the way up to Hirzel. larger population (23k). Lake Zurich and Sihlwald for leisure activity. More foreigners (29.4% vs. 25.7%). Lower tax (87%), trend up. But more rich and high income people live in Horgen. A bit younger population and more families. 5 Hotels. Less traffic for size and population (60k movements (w/o Hirzel)).

AFAIK traffic numbers do not include Autobahn.

Politics:
SVP in both communes around 28.7 %, Horgen more FDP, Dietlikon more SP.

But most of that is farmland with lovely paths for running, cycling with the children or pushing a pram.

Lake Zurich and Sihlwald for leisure activity
For the OP- there is a path all the way along the lake to Richterswil and beyond which is great for cycling, running, walking and pushing a buggy. Lots of ducks and other birds to entertain your young one and when they are a bit older, some great serviced bathing spots (badis) and playgrounds.

There are more local woods to Horgen than the Sihlwald which are in walking distance and are great to explore. They can take you all the way to Adliswil - where there is a great indoor and outdoor pool with areas for toddlers both inside and outside. Waedenswil (just down the road from Horgen) also has an indoor pool and ice skating.

I don't know much about Dietlikon but Horgen is great if you've got a young family.

Nah, really easy to say: Horgen. The only thing I could see Dietlikon in the lead is having a sex shop the size of a supermarket.
