Wollishofen vs Oerlikon

Dear fellow expats,

We are a young Italian couple Relocating in Zurich soon. I will be commuting to Zug daily while my wife will work in Glattpark.

In order to find a permanent apartment we have visited many areas and the two listed in subject sound the best in terms logistics.

Which one you would go for? We are just married and hope to enlarge family soon.

I personally love wollishofen for the lake, oerlikon is more citish let’s say.

Let me know your thoughts!

Grazie
Andrea

Re: Wollishofen vs Oerlikon

Hi Andrea,

If you think only of the distance to and from work, I guess Wollishofen is still the better compromise for both of you, especially if you'll use the S-Bahn.

Now, judging by the quality of housing - Wollishofen is an older area with few(er) new buildings, whereas Oerlikon is an area where they have built a lot in the past 10-15 years and are not planning to stop any time soon. You can have a very nice, more spacious and new apartment for a lot less than something similar in Wollishofen. But it will be mostly your wife who will benefit from the convenience of living so close to the working place. If you plan to start a family any time soon and she'll continue to work after her maternity leave, this can turn into an advantage for you too.

If I were in your place and had to choose with my heart - I'd also choose Wollishofen but only because I like it more. I am not sure it's the best choice from every and all the other aspects though.

Oh, and welcome to Switzerland and to the forum, hope everything will turn out great for you!

Re: Wollishofen vs Oerlikon

I myself like Wollishofen more than Oerlikon and loved being so close to the lake, (We lived a couple of yrs on Seestrasse) I'd say the only thing in favour of living in Oerlikon would be that it is convenient with a small child that one parent works close-by home. As for transport the S24 goes directly from Oerlikon to Zug in about 40 minutes Just to hope it arrives on convenient times for you.

However depending on how much time you have to find an apartment, you might consider betting on both horses.

Re: Wollishofen vs Oerlikon

Wollishofen is generally considered to be more "up market". So if that matters to you then Wollishofen is the place. The proximity to the lake does it as well as appartments often being a bit larger and more spacious.

Oerlikon on the other hand is better connected, being served by several train lines and several tram lines going in all directions as well as numerous shops, the farmer's market etc.

Re: Wollishofen vs Oerlikon

I prefer Wollishofen, but competition for apartments there is fierce.

Also, as others have said, having one spouse living very close to their workplace is a good idea.

You will find a lot more options in Oerlikon.

It also depends if the apartment is actually 'near' the station.

Re: Wollishofen vs Oerlikon

There are some very beautiful, quiet areas in Oerlikon. And not far from the train station.
So it will all depend on the particular offer.
