Quick update, they have rejected our dossier for the new contract. Won't say why. Really not quite sure where to go from here, England? Any ideas?
Find a new apartment. As much as you like this one, it sounds like the landlord would be a pain in the neck.

I agree, that is probably for the best
Although from what I hear they are all as bad as each other!
Does a decent estate agent exist in Lausanne?

it's their house, they don't have to rent it to you if they feel they can get more milk out of somebody else (e.g. somebody not privy to the current price, and somebody more stably in the country).

I lucked out with my apartment because there is no agency, the owner manages it directly and is a decent person.

When are you leaving?
It looks like we will have to find another one, and sharpish. But it still ticks me off that the agency can behave like this and get away with it!

A landlord looks at the risk of a tenant defaulting, same as a bank. So they tend to go for the assumed lesser risk, stable income etc

Given the current situation and your willingness to take over the apartment, you may be able to get an extension of the contract. The likelihood of success (and lenght of the extension, if any) will probably also depend on the duration of the sublease so far. Perhaps ask ASLOCA about it.

Sadly the sublease also ends at the end of August, probably should have extended it before beginning this charade!
Signed up for ASLOCA too, although the reviews for the Lausanne office seem quite appalling. It takes about a week to 10 days for them to complete you sign up apparantly

You could only extend the sublease if the main lease is extended, however I imagine that the main tenents weren't interested in doing so.

Re: Rent Increase, Sous Location taking over the contract

We're good friends now with the actual leasers, so I am sure that we could ask them to extend it. But perhaps it is better to move as was said earlier! If anybody knows of anything good near Lausanne please do get in touch, the forum section seems a little light on the French speaking apartments
