Having hired people from school, I can confirm most of them are not used to a normal work week

I'm not saying they should work 40+ hours at school though - learning is different, and the brain needs time to absorb, plus they need time to grow as individuals.
It is more related to the precious time window of quality focus. 15-20min max. There is a reason why pilots have an autopilot, too, and they are trained. One has to oscilate between focus and active down time, our brains dictate that anyways.

Teaching, btw, is like news broadcast, actually it's harder coz it's interractive (I do want to interract with our TV people but somehow they don't hear me). The 45min of teaching has a substantial amount of prep and admin behind it. The data needs to be logged in left and right, almost always double times. Communication flows between colleagues, admin, parents and students - it's not automatic, it gets organized by teachers who do that on top of their classes. Now with quarantines and online follow up it's even more time consuming. And, teachers often work at more than 1 school. I am far from complaining, but the relatively little time window of actual class time is the easier and lovelier part of the job, tbh. But for kids - it's the same thing as for us. Sitting in a class and learning is one thing but the whole school life is bigger than that, school is a big organism and there are other tasks, roles and duties for them. They have to be their own managers, not much is pre-digested for them, autonomy is important here. Another thing is, sometimes the home situation preoccupies too. I don't think that kids have just classes and nothing else to be accountable for. That's just presence and participation - when in fact the support system behind all this is sophisticated and ran by school and kids.
