Help me decide - Allenwinden or Oberägeri (canton Zug)???

My girlfriend and I have a choice of renting one of two apartments, and it's proving a hard decision to make!

We have a choice of an apartment in a farm house in Allenwinden, which is in a nice location, with good public transport links. Everything about it is nice, but Allenwinden just seems a little bit sedate comapred to Oberägeri (both in terms of nature and amenities).

The one in Oberägeri is also in a farm house, it's about 1.5km up a (steep) hill, and is surrounded by beautiful nature with a jaw-dropping view of the lake. The main problem here is a lack of direct public transport, as my girlfriend doesn't drive (yet). I think we could get around this with an ebike or electric scooter though.

Obviously, it's impossible for you to make an objective decision for us based on this limited information, but I'm more interested in any obvious pros and cons of either location. Thanks!

It is a tough decision but I would go with Allenwinden simply because your girlfriend doesn't drive and a 1.5 km road gets old real fast. Although Allenwinden is a sleepy village, Zug or Baar is literally just a short bus ride away.

These villages get a pretty amount more snow than Zurich.

While your girl-friend may be ok with taking a scooter or an ebike during the Summer and in the lovely Autumn mornings we have now, imagine riding down these steep roads when they're slightly covered with snow and not cleared yet.

I've been riding my bike to school, university and work for probably over 40 years now and I don't drive to work by bike either with snow and ice on the road (I have to go over the Üetliberg, via Uitikon-Waldegg) - simply because it's way too dangerous.

Either way, she should enroll into driving school ASAP, because being able to drive a car is a de-facto requirement if you live outside the city (IMO).

My co-worker lives in Allenwinden, BTW, but he and his wife both have cars (she works 100%, too, though - does your girl-friend have a job or intends to seek one?).

With Covid19, it's unlikely he'll set foot into a train anytime soon - and he hated it even before that...

Thank you for your thoughts everyone.

No, my girlfriend doesn't have a job yet, but is looking for one.

As for her driving, she is actually flying back to the Netherlands to take her test in two weeks' time, so hopefully she'll soon be road legal (fingers crossed!). Still, I think she's pretty scared of the twisty mountain roads, and winter will likely present its own set of driving challenges (...for us both).

That test/permit is unlikely to be accepted by Switzerland. I'm not really into the details so I may well be wrong, but I believe you need to have been abroad for at least 12 months, and the test taken during that time, for it to be accepted here.

You don't sound like living out of town is your thing, at all, that rules out Oberägeri. And e-bikes are anything but cheap here, you probably want to check out prices as part of your decision-taking process.

Indeed. If she's scared of mountain roads, she should take driving lessons here and not in the Netherlands.

It's not like that piece of paper will magically make that problem go away.
