Move from Sweden to Switzerland - where to live, Baden or?

Hello everyone,

My husband got a job offer in Switzerland and we will move to there in the middle of November. The contract begins from 1st Dec. Now we live in Stockholm. It was not an esay decision for me to move. We will lose my salary plus high living cost in Switzerland, insurance fee and daycare fee.(We have a 1,5 year old daughter) Even though his salary is much higher. Anyway I am here to ask your advice about where to live.

His office will be in Lupfig. So we are wondering if it is a good choice to live in Baden. I have read quite a lot of infomaiton on the forum but still can not make a decision. His colleagues recommends Lenzburg many times. But will it be better to live in a bigger city so we have easier access to meet more expat people? Will it be easier for my daughter to find a daycare if i need to go for interview or to study? Will it be easier to have access to the german learning school?
We are going to there to visit apartments to rent in the begining of October and most of them will be in Baden, Dättwil, Wettingen.

Thanks a lot for your time and advice.

I personally think Lenzburg is much nicer than Baden. Public transport connections are good wherever you are, you can easily get to Baden or Zurich or ... from there. I would go look at the apartments and make my decision from there.

Welcome to the forum!

I work in Dättwil and around here there's only offices, the cantonal hospital and ABB. The few apartments and home are uninspiring. But, I don't know what you're looking for, maybe you find the quietness around here pleasant

Then, how is he planning to commute to work? Car or train? Baden and Wettingen are on the slopes of a very narrow river valley, streets are narrow and the traffic is quite a problem. Driving home from Lupfig to Baden/Wettigen after work can be a nightmare, better use public transport. Driving to Dättwil or Lenzburg means less trouble, since it's on big valley and several new apartments buildings have been built. Rent is lower compared to Baden and the city center is also charming. Train is also an option. Lupfig is also close to Brugg. You could also look for accomodation in there.

There are German schools almost everywhere. I took courses in Baden, my wife in Aarau. Quite sure there's also courses on Brugg or Lenzburg. Shouldn't be a worry.

Meet more expat people? Baden and Brugg may be the better. Close to them there are the local HQ of GE and ABB, the Paul Scherer Institute (physics & chemistry research) and nagra (Swiss nuclear waste).

Good flat hunting!

Re: Move from Sweden to Switzerland - where to live, Baden or?

Lenzburg is pretty, but small. The traffic getting in and out of it has gotten bad over the past couple years. Baden is also pretty, bigger with more (foreigner) buzz, but the traffic in and out of Baden is really bad during commute times. Both have good train connections.

Honestly, I would pick Aarau over them both. It's a much nicer old town, with lots of shops, pubs and restaurants, and it has a nice relaxed mood about it. Trains from Aarau to Lupfig take 20 minutes, and to Zurich 30 minutes.

Hi Good morning,
We have no clue how Dättwil looks like actually. We found a nice apartment there and would like to go there and take a look around. Since you said there is not much things there, we can narrow down our choices now I gusess...

Re: Move from Sweden to Switzerland - where to live, Baden or?

I would prefer Baden over the other options for the following reasons:
- It has a nice old town and bath quarters, and it lies along the Limmat River.
- It has quite a big English speaking international community due to the presence of GE and ABB. Many of those working at PSI research institute also choose to settle here partly due to the convenience of train from PSI to Baden.
- It has Manor, which is a reputable department store in Switzerland.
- It has nicer and more branded goods shops than Wettigen, Dattwil, Lenzburg. But comparable to Aarau.
- It has many daycares, and the last I checked there are many available spaces, unlike in previous years.
- It has a family center called Karussell that offers language classes with free babysitting, Krabbelgruppe, playgroups, and an indoor playground where you can meet other mothers of similar aged children during 3-5pm everyday. And your child can meet other children too.
- Train to Zürich in 16 minutes the fastest, 30 minutes the average.

But I would finding a place in or near the Limmat River/ Casino Park or Ennetbaden which is just on the other side of the river (just 100m bridge away).

I looked on google map, there are two routes you can take from Lupfig to Baden, the one from Dättwil is usually more heavy traffic than that from Turgi.
