Have they already returned your deposit? If not - that is what the deposit is for, hopefully it should cover whatever damage you did to the cupboards. So I don't think they can withhold the rent.
No I wont see the deposit for months. That's my point. It won't be sorted until after they get these custom cupboards. Which, I should add, don't really have any damage at all.

If you genuinely cannot afford to pay people a decent wage, you should simply do the job yourself. None of my family members have ever paid for an apartment to be cleaned professionally, my brother moved out of a place recently and borrowed my steam cleaner and window cleaner to help with the job. There was no problem with the handover.
Well it seems you have quite the network of support going for you, and your brother too. If I could borrow a steam cleaner it might be another story. I'm here completely without any support from family. All effort, work and tools to do so are my responsibility alone.

I didn't negotiate the price, I put my details into a price comparison site, and chose the first one to come up. I didn't actually realise the price difference until I'd already agreed to go with them. Edit to add: I didn't get another quote from this comparison service until a couple of days later.

What you're talking about is a completely different situation than mine. I hired a company. In hindsight, I would have loved to give the cleaners some money directly after they left. But that's not what the OP is about. For sure the 100chf additional won't go to them. It's about the fact they had to send me a bill via email that's why they added this cost on. If I agree to pay what they ask and even add some additional money, you think the cleaners will see that benefit?

We're not talking about me taking advantage of a cleaner. We're talking about a cleaning company, a big one I might add, trying to take advantage of me. They're adding costs that weren't agreed, and even disregarding written text I signed my name to.

They can't keep the rent as a deposit, I would just politely let them know that you need the money back now but of course know there is an invoice to follow for the repairs that you've accepted need to be done.

If they still say no, you can ask your bank, who will ask their bank, who will then ask the landlord - who may respond differently to that sort of formal approach...
Thanks for that. I'll go to my bank today.

I have asked them on the phone and with a previous email. The latter went unanswered.
