Looking for nice areas in Zurich

Hi everyone,

I will be relocating to Zurich in early 2021 and I was looking for recommendations on nice areas to live in (within 1 hour of the centre of Zurich by transport, preferably less). I have been looking at Oerlikon which seems nice but I am open to other suggestions. I will be moving with my other half, we are both young and like to go outdoors on the weekends but also enjoy our nightlife on a Friday night (pre pandemic). Ideally we would like to be close to grocery stores, transport etc.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and if you would like any further information then please let me know.

The big bit missing from your question is an idea of your likley Budget...

There are far lovelier places to live up to 1 hour from Zurich that Oerlikon, and also very lovely places to live right in the centre near all the (closed) nightlife.

But they might be more expensive than you can afford/would like to afford. Or not... (you could be a hot shot finance guy/independently wealthy for all we know).

In Zurich it is sadly a big trade off for price/convenience/time.

Kind regards

Ian

1h from Zuri HB by public transport covers half of Switzerland. Indeed, budget and place of work would be good to know. Oerlikon and the entire northern area from Affoltern to Dubendorf not great in my view.

The downtown area of Oerlikon -- and especially the train station area -- can be a bit seedy (drug dealers, etc.) and in general just isn't a very nice area, in my opinion. It's also not really what I would consider an ideal place for someone who loves nature.

If you're willing to take a train into central Zurich for the nightlife on the weekends, you might want to consider smaller areas / villages that are on the outskirts of Zurich. The rent will most likely be cheaper as well (as opposed to living in central Zurich).

We live in Greifensee, which is a village on Lake Greifensee that is a 15-minute train ride from central Zurich (the main train station). We really love it here. It's very peaceful and safe and the lake is excellent for swimming as well as BBQ parties, etc. in the warmer months. And there is a trail that goes all around the lake, for walking/running or biking. And for shopping, there are larger cities very nearby (Volketswil and Uster). Anyways, Greifensee is just an idea / suggestion and to give you an idea of the alternatives you have to living in a more densely populated area such as Oerlikon. Also, if you and you other half plan to every have children, that is also something to consider -- an area that is good for raising kids.

Feel free to send me a private message if you ever have any questions. And welcome to the forum.

Wallisellen of course is an exception. Because that is where the cat goes.

Re: Looking for nice areas in Zurich

I'm in Dübendorf, as I've stated elsewhere I think it's perfectly fine, for nature you're not too far from the Greifensee, and theres plenty of access to the city. Maybe Greifensee town is better suited for access to the small lake but Dübi feels a lot closer to the city.

Re: Looking for nice areas in Zurich

Next to budget, also depends on what you define as nature. Zurich is a small city and living in the city center you can reach great outdoor mountainous settings within an hours train ride from HB.

If you are thinking of walking distance nature from your flat, Wiedikon could be nice as well as Albisrieden (easy walk to the Uetliberg). If you have a sizable budget check out https://guggachpark.ch/en/home/ brand new apartments and you are in the forest as soon as you leave your front door. Tram stop is 2 min walk and you are downtown in 10min on the tram or 20min walk.

Enjoy the great city after moving here!

The cities around the Lake o Zurich are very nice to live as well. Close to Zurich, lake for some bath and hills for hiking.

Re: Looking for nice areas in Zurich

Forgot to mention - I love Oerlikon, the old part. It is a bit colorful, true, not your standard sterile expat snobby neighborhood, such as Seefeld which I would avoid. In Oerlikon you are close to the great Irchel Park and from there easy walk to Zuriberg, nice nature. Shops are close, good size farmers market every Wednesday and Saturday and great public transport links to downtown (trains and trams) and excellent transport links to the airport as well. I personally love Oerlikon, lived there many years until we bought a property elsewhere in city. I guess nice flats can be found around Venusstarsse or Berninaplatz area. It is just my personal taste. It also depends from where you are coming from and what you are expecting. All comes down to taste in Zurich in my view as the city is small, very safe, has good public transport... Cheers.

LOL, for what? Drinking champagne in the Monocle shop with English speakers who never made an effort to get to know the city, locals, local culture or make a slightest effort to speak German and integrate?! And think they are better than all the rest?!

Isn‘t Seefeld where all the Germans live?

I‘d rather do that than live in Oerlikon to be honest.

Given the OP, I‘d be looking at Wiedikon, towards Triemli/Friesenberg. Everything desired is in walking distance or at worst a tram/bus with a nicer vibe than Oerlikon.

Depending on your nationality, OP, you may or may not be allowed to work in one canton but live in another. Best to check what applies to you, before entertaining the suggestions to move out of Zurich to Schwyz.

Agree on Oerlikon but disagree on Seefeld, but it's not an issue as Seefeld is outside of a lot of peoples' budgets.

We lived in Opfikon and Oerlikon when we first arrived for three weeks, and I did a decent amount of hunting for an apartment there, before deciding it wasn't for me because of the amount of building work going on at the time (since completed).

At your age, and thinking of easy access to nightlife, I'd live closer to the centre to be honest. Somewhere where the trams run into the early hours of the morning. We're on the Gold Coast, but trains into the city stop around midnight Mon-Thur, so if we go to a midweek gig in town, we're always rushing to catch the last train home.

Look around Schmiede Wiedikon walking down to Manesseplatz. Lots of little quiet streets, parks and the train that takes you up the Uetliberg easily. More modern buildings found in Binz, Tiergarten, Wasserschopfi and a bunch that are being built.

Would advise living in the marked area. Sunny side, less traffic, better proportion of Swiss, fewer criminals. Dont live in the low areas along the Limmat river as there is danger of flooding when the Sihl dam breaks.
