buying apartment - location

Hi
We looking for property to buy (Stockwerkeigentum). As we have a small child (2 years old) I am thinking that it should be within walking distance to school and kindergarten. This would be the ultimate luxury from my perspective.

We have found some apartaments which require taking the bus (Postauto) 2-3 km to the school.

At the moment my wife is not working and takes care of the child. If she starts working again (child in daycare/afterschool) and one of us takes public transportation to work we will be busy commuting to the kindergarten, to school, then to work, then all the way back from work to kita/afterschool etc, having an apartament not kilometers away from school would be a huge advantage.
We do not intend to have two cars.

Some of you on the forum have gone through that, without having two cars. What is your opinion? Am I worrying too much?

Re: buying apartment - location

I foresee two possibilities:
-if my wife works child will eat and stay at afterschool
-if my wife does not work she will take the child from school home to lunch

Re: buying apartment - location

It is do-able but not advisable. Unless you really, really like the apartment or think it is a good deal (might want to check again a bit later when the recession will hit harder) and plan to live there till your retirement. imho
Every place you need to take Postauto to go places is a big no-no in my book. Did you think of your social life in some place with 5k inhabitants? Or will it be just a dorm? I'd think it through, from every point of view. Kid(s) will grow up and again, if you plan to own it long term, you must really like the location, the place itself, everything.
