Hi everyone
Current status:
My partner and I moved to Zurich in November 2020. We have temporary accommodation until the end of January but we are
looking for an apartment for the medium/long term starting from February 2021. As many of you have experienced, the house search is a bit overwhelming. We've been reading about the application process so I think we have a good idea of what we need. We've been searching for apartments on flatfox.ch, homegate.ch, and immoscout24.ch, and most recently on Facebook. No applications for now because we just started to send out messages about a week ago.
Now some questions:
1 - We set a budget for 2500CHF (preferably 3.5 rooms, with balcony and max 40min to work by public transport, and not too old, preferably newer). Is this realistic? We are both employed with permanent contracts - one of us makes 120k, and another 90k. I have been reading online that people recommend the apartment to be 30% of our salaries but we think it is too much. We want to save some money and also travel frequently.
2 - What areas outside of the center of Zurich would you recommend? Our jobs are near Enge station and near Altstetten station. We started to understand that outside of Zurich center we can rent a good modern apartment for a lower price. We have been looking for some areas outside the center like Opfikon, Dietikon, Dubendorf, Walliselen, and even Uster, but then it looks like the commute (with trains only every 30min) and the price increase of the transportation pass it is not really worth it. We are young and active people, like to do outdoor sports, go out to dinner sometime, do indoor climbing (bouldering), so I think moving to a really small town is not what we want at the moment. (Also, no plans of getting a car for the next months)
3 - Is it too early to start searching for apartments for February? We have been seeing more offers for December & January at the moment, and although we have some visitings scheduled we are afraid to accept now, because a lot more offers may exist in the next few weeks.
Any additional advice is appreciated, even if just helping to point in some direction or correct our way of thinking
Thank you & have a nice day!
