Finding an L Shaped Desk in Zürich

Hi everyone--I'm looking for a nice office desk akin to something like the screen shot I've included.

I haven't seen anything similar at Ikea or Micasa, or anywhere else really. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated!

You may have trouble. That dark wood thing is very much beloved in the U.S.A but not so much in Europe where people tend to go for a less fussy, lighter wood style.

This isn't just with furniture but also yacht interiors, kitchens and so on.

An antique one may be similar in style but won't be L-shaped.

The best answer may be to order from the U.S.

Re: Finding an L Shaped Desk in Zürich

Tom is right; it can be difficult to find good quality wood furniture of the type many of us loved back home. There is a different sense of style here.

That said, have you considered having a piece custom made? Although numbers are dwindling as times and tastes change, there are still many good furniture makers - Möbelschreiner - throughout Switzerland.

I've had several pieces made here because I could not find what I wanted in stores. I've been pleased not only with the outstanding quality of the work but also with the price. Obviously custom made wood furniture will be higher priced than Ikea or Micasa... but for the quality a good value.

Unfortunately the furniture maker I used retired some years ago, so I cant give you a recommendation. However, just start looking around your area for a Möbelschreiner. You might try smaller towns or villages first. Visit his or her workshop, see for yourself the quality of the work, discuss what styles are his or her strength, etc.

You can also find very good wood pieces at Antik Brockis, although the L style desk is a modern thing and really not European, so your chances of finding something at a Brocki are likely pretty low. But if you are open to other styles of wood furniture worth a look.

(Along those lines the Holzwurm Sanitorium in Benken SG is a treasure for fans of anique wood furniture.)

Good luck with the search.

Re: Finding an L Shaped Desk in Zürich

Try doing a Google search for "eckschreibtisch massivholz mit schubladen" (corner desk solid wood with drawers). I found a few with that search, though nothing quite as 'fancy' or elaborate as the one in your photo. It does seem like that kind of design is rare here.

Another option would be to search on amazon.de or on German furniture store sites and then, if need be, go there to pick it up. Also, Grenzpaket.ch allows you to buy on German sites and then ship to their German address (they have a few locations) and then pay only about 5 Euros to pick it up from them.

Good luck. I've also been trying to find the perfect desk.

Thank you so much for this idea! It seems like this might be the way to go.
